No rating yet NOTE: Due to a scheduling snafu, this is the rescheduled Stock Investing Meetup originally scheduled on Sept 15. Also note that we have room for only 30 people at this meeting. The anatomy of an IPO (the birth of a public company) – if the filing document is available, we will review the upcoming Dollar General IPO (what is a S-1 filing and how do we read it? (Hint: it is a document full of very useful information); What is a green shoe?! What are the differences between primary shares and secondary shares? How do the mechanics of the IPO process work?). In DG’s case, they were a public company from 1968 until 2007, taken private and expect to go public again. The anatomy of a bankruptcy (the death or near-death of a company and a re-birth) – we will look at the bankruptcy of K-Mart, the emergence from bankruptcy (what happened to the old shares? The old debt?), the merger of K*Mart with Sears and the current state of affairs of Sears Holding (Sears + K-Mart). A very interesting case study to say the least.
A financial analysis overview of the retail industry – a look at how to compare companies within the same industry based on financial strength (the balance sheet), profitability (the income statement), growth (of sales and earnings) and ratio analysis. An update/overview of the AAII Stock Screens (4 new screens have been added recently, bringing the total to 60) using the AAII Stock Investor Pro (SIP) software. Regards, Cost: $5.00 |

For a review of the comments and feedback from our first webinar on August 3, check out http://www.meetup.co The main webinar will begin promptly at 7pm and our goal is to use the CANSLIM methodology to analyze 2-dozen or so quality companies. If you have specific stocks you would to see in the mix, please send me the ticker symbol(s) ahead of time. In addition, at 6pm, we will host an introductory tutorial on using CANSLIM and the Daily Graphs Online tool. this will take about 45 minutes or so and will lay the groundwork for the 7pm main session. We are still working some of the kinks out, so we appreciate your patience. You will also have the ability to ask questions via a "chat box" on the website or possibly, a phone call-in number. This will be a "slides only" format with audio of the organizer(s), but no video of the speaker. There is a $5 fee for this meeting. Cut-off for sign-up is 4pm on the day of the seminar, Sept 1. NOTE: This August 17 in-person Meetup is meant to compliment the virtual webinar format Meetup that will take place on August 3, 2009 (see http://www.meetup.co If the virtual Meetup goes well, we anticipate alternating twice a month between in-person and virtual Meetups. We are open to suggestions as to how best to allocate our time at these Meetups. One possibility is to use the in-person meetings for a combination social interaction amongst attendees, educational topics and stock analysis and to use the virtual Meetups exclusively for stock analysis. Let us know your thoughts. Cost: $5.00 |

NOTE: TENTATIVE DATE/TIME IF THE REGISTRATION IS FULL AT 15 ATTENDEES, PLEASE SELECT "WAIT LIST" OPTION AS I AM WORKING TO GET ADDITIONAL WEBINAR SLOTS. This is an experiment to host an on-line webinar for our Atlanta CANSLIM/IBD Meetup group. All you will need is access to a computer with high-speed Internet connection and speakers or sound card. It will be a "slides only" format with audio of the organizer(s), but no video of the speaker. You will have the ability to ask questions via a "chat box" on the website or possibly, a phone call-in number. There is no charge for this initial webinar as we work out any kinks or problems. However, we are limited to 15 people for this initial webinar, so RSVP promptly (or add your name to the waiting list if it is full). Online log-in details will be sent to those that RSVP. If successful, we anticipate alternating about every 2 weeks or so between our in-person meetings at GSU-Brookhaven and the on-line webinars. We will have ample opportunity to discuss how to best allocate our time between these meetings. My initial thought is to use the in-person format for educational "how-to" topics, reviews of tools (software, books, advisory services, etc.) and socializing with other members and to utilize the webinar format for nothing but CANSLIM stock analysis and portfolio building. As we work our way through this format, please share your comments, feedback and preferences. Bill Lyman |

RSVP for our July 16 CANSLIM Meetup! Greetings! I hope everyone had an enjoyable independence day holiday. Our next Meetup is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 7pm, at the GSU Brookhaven Facility (address/directions on our website). I will arrive around 6 pm and will be available to answer any questions about the CANSLIM methodology or other stock investing related issues - for newcomers and veterans alike. We will start with an analysis of the top 3 stocks in the top industry groups. As of this Monday's IBD newspaper (July 6, 2009), the top 10 industry groups are (with ticker symbols of the leading stocks in brackets): 1. Software Top 10 Winners * Fuqi International FUQI 17.8 Bottom 10 Losers * Sepracor SEPR -14.4 As of Monday, the market outlook was in a confirmed uptrend with 5 distribution days for the Dow and 4 for the S&P 500, Nasdaq and NYSE in recent weeks . A quick glance at the IBD 100 list shows some good chart patterns emerging - we will examine many of these in detail. As we did last month, we will examine fundamental data (like earnings performance, return on equity (RoE), profit margins, sales growth and debt/leverage) and technical analysis data (relative strength over the last 52 weeks, the accumulation/distrib Of course our analysis will be modified to reflect the current market environment and leading sectors and stocks as of the week of our Meetup. As always, YOUR stock ideas will move to the top of the list for the group to analyze. We will also raffle off another copy of the newest (4th) edition of William O'Neil's "How to Make Money in Stocks" book (if you've already purchased the book, you'll receive $10 as a substitute prize).
