Event 712: Central European Card Games at Caribou Coffee in Westlake

As always, we are happy to teach new players, so if you do not yet know any of these games, come on out and learn. Nearly everyone in the group learned these games after joining the group, so you are definitely not alone!

To date, we have learned a total of five central European card games:

  • Tappen (Tapp Tarock) (3 players)
  • Strohmandeln (Strawman Tarock) (2 players)
  • Schnapsen (2 players)
  • Slovenian Tarok (3 players)
  • Bauernschnapsen (4 players)

Tonight we will play whichever of them fits our number of attendees and/or is in most demand. There is always the possibility of playing more than one!

The new game was a lot of fun, and I really had some crazy hands, both good crazy and bad crazy.! Not shuffling the deck in French and Czech games has such interesting results, it makes me wonder why people ever began shuffling in the first place! LOL. I am working on the cheat sheet to reflect what I feel would be a better way of dealing with the 100 bonus and its multipliers. It tends to get pretty expensive if someone has, say, 150 points. 2x2x2x2x2x2=64. Some play that you ADD instead of multiply, which would result in 2+2+2+2+2+2=12 for the same hand. Not quite the shock to the chip pile. I am sure Lisa and Melissa will both agree! Fleks and re-fleks will be treated the same way, so that a 1-point suit game fleked and re-fleked will be worth 3 instead of 4 points (in hearts, 6 instead of 8). The new revised cheat sheet will reflect these changes. These are variations that already exist, so I am not making up something new. I believe it will work out fine.

Since tonight's new game is a pub game, and normally played for small change, we will be using chips. This will make it easy to move tables around and mix it up, if necessary. That being said, with 9 on right now, the plan will be to start off with 2 tables of 4 playing with dealer sitting out, and I will just coach and help with scoring, which has been the biggest challenge for me to figure out. Once everyone has caught on, we will re-group into 3 groups of 3, adding a 4th to a group if we get another participant, and I will join in the fun. See you there!

With Nadine now on the list,we will start with 3 games of 3, with 6 at one table and 3 at the other. I will join the single 3 and make it a 4 as soon as I think it is safe.

I have abandoned my original plan for teaching Hungarian Tarokk, as I am overwhelmed figuring out how to make it easy for everyone to understand. We will tackle that one at another time. I will still teach a new game, however. The game I have chosen is the national game of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, known as Mariáš. It is a 3-handed game, playable with 4 with the dealer sitting out, which means that any number of players we end up with, except 5, will work beautifully. If we end up with 5, I will make it work by sitting out the entire game and coaching, LOL. Throughout Slovakia and much of the Czech Republic the game is normally played with the double-ended "William Tell" pattern card deck (think Schnapsen and Bauernschnapsen), while in Bohemia, the single-ended Bohemian pattern is used. This deck has the distinguished characteristic of not being commonly used anywhere except Bohemia. Both of these decks will be available for our use at this event!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
