Regular Monthly Meeting--Open Topic Night

Open Topic is an opportunity to discuss new developments in science and society from a rational perspective without resort to supernatural influences. Often a video or reference will be presented as a suggested starting topic.

Lawrence Lessig: We the People, and the Republic we must reclaim (TED talk)

"There is a corruption at the heart of American politics, caused by the dependence of Congressional candidates on funding from the tiniest percentage of citizens. That's the argument at the core of this blistering talk by legal scholar Lawrence Lessig. With rapid-fire visuals, he shows how the funding process weakens the Republic in the most fundamental way, and issues a rallying bipartisan cry that will resonate with many in the U.S. and beyond."

Belatedly, I'm able to offer a most sincere apology to all of you who were stood up because I didn't show with the key. I had a medical emergency in the family at the last minute and, frankly, didn't even think of you guys until late that night. So sorry! I think we need to have someone else pick up the key in the future - someone who lives near the meeting place so that if something happens, at least the key is nearby so it can be handed off.

Thanks again to Bob and Mary for inviting us all to their home when the key to the room at EPUD didn't materialize.
Here is a link to the Wyden initiative I mentioned. If you like it give him a short atta boy some way. Important I think for politicians to get positive feedback.

Can we do anything about democracy; or should we? Hopefully a rational discussion will follow this 18 minute TED talk beginning at 7pm.

New to the group. Maybe the monthly meeting is a good start?
