Reason for a Change Mini-conference and Secular Spaghetti Supper

In response to the Canadian Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast (a gathering "in the spirit of Jesus Christ"), CFI is presenting a mini-conference with speakers and panel discussion on public secularism, followed by a Pastafarian Supper in the spirit of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The event will start with a talk by Leonard Baak, founder and president of the One School System network, a group working to end the discriminatory practice of public funding of Catholic schools in Ontario (www.oneschoolsystem.org).

Next will be a presentation by Xander Miller: "End the Age of Truthiness: A call for a return to secular government and evidence-based policy".    Xander will make the case that secular
government is not about excluding religious people from government but rather a necessary foundation for a functioning democracy, arguing that secularists have lost the first war for reason by letting their cause be negatively framed as anti-religion.  In today's "dark age of truthiness", those who desire a return to reason by are reminded them that secularism is not defined by what it is against but rather by the importance of what it is for.

Following these two presentations, we will have breakout sessions for informal brainstorming-style discussions about the nature of secularism and how to preserve and promote it in our society and environment, after which we will reconvene in the larger group to discuss questions, comments and suggestions for followup actions.

The spaghetti supper will start at 6:00 pm.  Vegetarian and vegan options will be available.

Cost:

$10

$5 for CFI members

Free for student/limited income members of CFI

Free for kids when accompanied by an adult

We are looking for volunteers to bring spaghetti sauce, large pots for boiling pasta, and desserts.  (Costs will be re-imbursed by CFI Ottawa.)  Please contact April if you would like to offer assistance.

Hi, Duncan. An unopened jar will be fine. We have a few people bringing sauce in crock pots. If we start running low we can heat up some of your jarred sauce. Thanks for the help!

Hi, the sauce I was thinking of bringing is store-bought stuff in jars , so it wouldn't be in a crock pot. I assume you have some way to heat it up there?

hi, Duncan. Will you be bringing it in a crock pot? We prefer this because it will make it easy for us to keep the food warm and safe. please feel free to email me directly if you need help or have a question. My email is linked above.

We also need desserts! Cookies, muffins, cakes, fruit salads, whatever you like. Anyone who brings a dessert will eat for free, but you must tell me ahead of time that you will be doing so.

Last, we need a couple large stock pots in order to cook the pasta. If anyone would like to bring in a large (about 8 to 10 litre) pot that would be very helpful!

Please let me know what you would like to do as soon as you can. If you have any questions just send them my way as well.

We still need a few more people to volunteer to bring food to the Secular Supper. We need some more sauce of any variety (red, meat, white, green). If you can bring sauce please let me know. Warm sauces should be brought in a crock pot if possible. If you do not have one and still want to bring in sauce just let me know and I can work it out with you. Cold sauces (like pesto) can be brought in any kind of dish and can be refrigerated if needed.

Kids are welcome to come to the Spaghetti Supper. (The earlier portions are not likely of much interest to the little ones.)
