Join us for the first large scale CFI Conference in Eastern Canada, as we welcome:

  • PZ Myers (Biologist and author of the Pharyngula Blog)
  • Eugenie Scott (Executive Director of National Center for Science Education)
  • Ophelia Benson (Columnist for Free Inquiry magazine and author of Butterflies and Wheels Blog)
  • Christopher DiCarlo (Philosopher of Science and author of How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass)
  • Sara Mayhew (Mangaka and TED Fellow)

The conference opens with a Friday night plenary session, "Archaeology, Anthropology, and Eschatology" discussing the historical relationship between humans and our apocalypses. Saturday morning and afternoon, we have parallel tracks: 1) Talks and panels on skepticism/science/science communication (including a live recording of Ottawa Skeptics' podcast, The Reality Check) and 2) "The Immaculate Convention" - talks and panels on religion from an academic and sociological perspective. Saturday evening there will be a reception with food and drink in the early evening at the Canadian Museum of Nature (around the corner from the hotel), after which there will be a talk by PZ Myers, followed by a meet-and-greet social, with snacks, cash bar, and access to some of the galleries and exhibits. On Sunday the parallel tracks include panels and workshops on ethics, gender identity and parenting. Free daycare is provided for all parents (registration required by 21 September).

Excellent. Very enjoyable, eclectic, interesting mix of speakers, older and younger, varying perspectives, varying voices. While the schedule was fairly tightly packed, there was still time to talk in meals and breaks, and I wound up meeting and mixing with a wide representation of speakers and other attendees. So it was a great networking opportunity, and nice just to have the time to sit and talk with such minds as these. Finally, having the gala at the museum and having the galleries open was an absolutely brilliant touch. Drinks and finger food and dinosaurs, oh my. Very nicely done.
