CHEARS! does LONDON!

Lets escape beyond the environs of Winchester and go on an adventure to the capital! With a walk, a photography competition, a market to haggle in, history aplenty, shops, a gallery visit and drinks there is going to be something for everyone. So why not join us for a day trip to remember?!

Here’s how our itinerary for the day will look:

• Meet at London Waterloo at Midday.

• Stroll along the South Bank to explore Borough Market – a great food market where we’ll grab a bite to eat - see http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk/

Continue along the SOuth Bank to Tower Bridge then cross the Thames at  Tower Bridge and walk West through the City

• Then either visit the gorgeous Courtauld Gallery (There is a Becoming Picasso Paris 1901 exhibition on as well as their world-famous collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints and the decorative arts).

• Or explore Covent Garden to look round some shops, watch the street performers and take in the atmosphere.

• Finishing off with everyone meeting for drinks in Covent Garden at about 5:30pm

For those wanting to stay on into the evening, we have also arranged dinner at a restaurant near Waterloo station:

Photography competition

For all you budding photographers there will be a competition to take part in during the day. More details to follow on the theme, how to enter, rules and prize for the competition to follow.

We look forward to seeing you,

Also like to thank Karen at the 29 June "Summer Ball" for doing the count of the votes for the "CHEARS! does London" photo competition and to everyone who voted for all the pictures posted. There were many very good photos from talented CHEARS! photographers, pure luck I got the image that attracted most of the votes cast. Thanks everyone.

Another great time with many good CHEARS! friends. What did I ever do without such a vibrant and sociable group of people to spend such special times with. Cheers all of you.
    DaveR

And remember, vote for the best photos you consider sums the day up for you - obviously these will be the ones that I will post ! :-)

Thanks for the fun bonus visit to St Paul's. I've never been told off so many times since I was at school!

      Karen, John, Steve,
Are you still aiming to make a presentation at the summer ball on Saturday 29 June for the best 'CHEARS! enjoys London' photograph from the day trip the group made back on 4 May? If so it maybe worth while reminding everyone who attended - or even consider asking all CHEARS! friendly socialites to cast their vote for their one favourite photo. What do you think ?

Echoing others: thanks to all the hosts for putting on a great day, even the weather worked out in the end after a touch and go start! I put the balance of my photos up on Skydrive if you feel like looking at more from the day!

In case we ever get a pub quiz question on this ... The original Pimm's No 1 was made using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs as an aid to digestion. The range was extended using other spirit bases -
    No. 2 cup - Scotch,
No. 3 cup - brandy (now called Pimm's Winter cup)
    No. 4 cup - rum,
    No. 5 cup - rye,
No. 6 cup - vodka (still in production) Maybe we should have a Pimm's tasting evening following the wine tasting and beer tasting ?

Well done Dave. a Pimms tasting evening sounds like a great idea, especially during the summer

A guideline for the photography competition in London could be that each person uploads a maximum of 10 photographs taken on the theme of 'Chears having fun in London'. All members can then choose to 'like' the photos that they feel best represent the theme. The photo with the most likes wins the prestigious Chears London Photographer mystery prize to be awarded with great fanfare and drumrolls at the Chears Summer Ball. It could be you!

A friend of mine went this morning. He said it was quiet but Saturday will probably be busier. He paid on the door at the same price as online (£7.50) and said it was worth the visit. For the geeks among us (you know who you are) the exhibition is sponsored by Sony and they are displaying some photos on their brand new 4K Digital HDTV's, plus they have some of their newer camera gear there to play with if you should feel so inclined! Hope this helps with the decision making ...

    Hi all,
From the posted details for the day, looks like the Eastleigh travellers (and those along the track) will aim to catch the earlier train (my email message showing train times seems to have gone missing!). I have printed off a couple of Steve's maps with the route and the days event schedule in case anyone forgets. Lets hope for a good sunny day.

Anyone travelling up from Petersfield station, or other stations on the same line?

    April 18, 2013

Hi all - for those that want to travel up together from Winchester we can meet at the station and travel together. I and several other attendees have network railcards which allow us to buy tickets for up to 4 people at a reduced price so we can leverage these. We will post more details on logistics for the whole day nearer the time

    April 18, 2013

Wont be going with the group - but could well bump into you !!

    April 16, 2013

In case anyone is interested, I found this half price deal (£9.50) for a London sight seeing cruise on the Thames. Its a hop on hop off cruise from what I see. Details should anyone wish to check it out are at - http://www.travelzoo.com/uk/loc...

Would be good if there was at least a small group if interested in doing this, if no interest, at least you know for the next time you visit the capital.
