Some walk trivia for Tichborne...

In 1909 the US President Theodore Roosevelt made a request to the British Foreign Office to arrange for an expert on bird song to accompany him on a walk through the British countryside. Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary [masked]), kept a cottage on the banks of the Itchen.

Being an amateur naturalist himself, Grey accompanied Roosevelt. On 9 June 1910 the pair started out from Tichborne, rambling along seven miles of the Itchen to Kings Worthy. From there they were driven to Stoney Cross in the New Forest and walked to Brockenhurst.

The Migratory Bird Treaty (MBTA) is often cited as an outcome of this walk. The MBTA has maintained the protection of migratory birds in North America ever since.

Some of the birds recorded by Roosevelt and Grey include: Skylark, Yellowhammer, Goldcrest, Greenfinch, Dunnock, Jackdaw, Blackcap, Garden Warbler, Willow, Warbler, Chiff Chaff, Treecreeper, Reed Bunting, Sedge Warbler, Coot, Moorhen, Little Grebe, Tufted Duck, Wood Pigeon, Turtle Dove, Lapwing (Peewit), Cuckoo, Swift.

As usual we request that you book your place (as with any organised CHEARS! event) so we can judge how popular events such as this are for the rest of the group. RSVP open from 9.00am 21 days before the event until 9.00am the day of the walk. If you have to drop out then please take your name of the list so that anyone waiting can take your place. Remember, we only need to know who is aiming to come, we don't need to know if you are not!

Your CHEARS! event organiser and other event hosts are volunteers so welcome your positive support. This event is posted and hosted by Steve Rob.

A lovely walk but think we should of been told that it was actually 10 1/2 miles instead of 6 .. We could of brought provisions with us and a few people struggled with the length.. We were walking for 4 1/2 hours x

Sorry I realise it was a long one. Estimated time back...3-30...we arrived at 3-35 and I did post a comment to take snacks. The only reliable walk details are posted the day before when I do the recce. Impossible to please everone but I hope you are not aching and fell proud to have walked 12 miles. Please check my UPDATES the day before every walk. Time accurate, distance I don't measure.

Our average walking speed was 2.5 mph so we should be able to roughly calculate distance from the estimated time. Nice walk although a little long for me. Thanks for organising.

Lovely walk, though Steve did plough on leaving people struggling to keep up. Had nice pint of cider to reward myself after an impressive 12 miles!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
