On September 16, 2011, at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia, President Obama signed the American Invents Act. This bill amends federal patent law to define the "effective filing date" of a claimed invention as the actual filing date of the patent or the application for patent containing a claim to the invention, replacing the current "first to invent" system with a "first inventor to file" system.

This change in filing will take effect in March 2013. See President Obama Signs the America Invents Act on YouTube:

The United States is moving from a "first to invent" patent system to a "first inventor to file" patent system under the "America Invents Act" (AIA). This change in filing will take effect in March 2013, requiring inventors and businesses to reconsider their patent strategies.

PowerPatent is presenting a series of online classes to help innovators become more effective at protecting their ideas and inventions. These classes will be about 1 hour and will be presented twice a month every other Thursday throughout 2013. The classes begin on Jan. 10th. The classes are free to all, but registration is required to attend at:

    http://www.powerpatent.com/webinar2013.

A different topic will be presented each session with a question and answer (Q&A) provided at the end. The concepts taught build on each other so inventors should plan on starting at the beginning and taking the entire series. PowerPatent Webinars

Lateral patient transfers pose a significant safety challenge for health care workers today. Approximately 52% of nurses complain of chronic back pain, which is primarily attributed to lifting and transferring patients.
Smart Medical Technology's patented Liftaem patient transfer system significantly reduces the time and number of health care workers needed for lateral transfer of patients. The Liftaem is designed to safely and effectively move a patient from one lateral surface to another using a cushion of air. An example would be moving a patient from the stretcher to the operating table. The Liftaem can even move patients up to 1,000 pounds. What used to take whole team of workers now takes only one.
