When I attended my first Meetup group it was a brand new experience for me and an eye opening one. As the group was quite small we had all introduced ourselves and said what role we were pursuing within the industry. I said that I was a writer director who had recently completed a comedy short, and I was looking for future collaborators for a number of projects at development stage. Shortly after however a nameless producer who was keen to impress announced that they were looking for crew and aimed to make a short a month. They initially had my interest until they turned to me and said "do you do make-up?".
Surely you can imagine my dismay and have surely been in a similar situation yourself, it's a common issue that people are judged swiftly and on unfair grounds especially in this industry. However it is clear to me that someone's gender, cultural background or level of experience is not an indicator of someone's ability.
This group does not care if you went to film school, this group does not care if you are not from the UK, this group does not care if you do not have a vast amount of previous filmmaking experience, or work in film.
This group is for those who are passionate about filmmaking and looking to get into it in some capacity. For those starting out in film & video production in London to connect in a social environment and discuss ideas, projects or even why Michael Bay is the worst director ever. The only pre-requisite is that you have a passion for film and respect for people at all levels.
Many people have already found crew and collaborators through the group, now is your chance to do the same. Or if you're looking to get some work experience, learn more about the trade or seek some advice and support this is the group for you. This industry is not easy, but let's try and and make it less stressful.
My aim to to offer the best and most engaging networking group and as such am up for trying out new concepts. This may involve changing venues and changing the format of the group. Feel free to message me your suggestions. I'm also open to posting new events, I unfortunately had to disable the groups ability to allow everyone to post due to some people using the group as a way to advertise paid for events for free without having to pay the organiser fees payable on all Meetup groups (naughty naughty!). Some CINNECT events have a nominal fee attached due to the cost of these (sorry).
