The Au Sable River in northern Michigan has long been known as one of the best trout streams in the Midwest and as the home of the longest non-stop professional canoe race and the oldest continual canoe race in the United States. It is also known as one of the great recreational canoe rivers in the Midwest. Clear water, constant flow, easy access and attractive surroundings make the Au Sable an ideal river trip for beginners and families. Our plan is to travel to Grayling Sunday and to put in at an outfitter in Grayling. We will paddle 58 miles over 4 days taking out at McKinley Bridge. The river will vary from reasonably narrow and shallow (1 to 3 feet) with sand gravel bottom to the large “ponds” formed by the Mio Dam. The only portage we will navigate is at Mio Dam. We will return to the outfitter Thursday evening and return to Indy on Friday. Arrangements for canoes or kayaks will depend on participant needs and availability. Cost may vary depending on participant needs for equipment.

You don’t HAVE to be a member to go on a trip so try out a CIWC trip before you join!

TO SIGN UP FOR A TRIP, CIWC MUST HAVE PAYMENT IN HAND.
The Treasurer, Bernie Weitekamp, ([masked]) tracks trip sign-ups & waiting lists. He cannot hold trip sign-ups unless he has a deposit check. Mail is picked up weekly and sign-ups are documented when the check is received. In the event the P.O. BOX receives more sign-ups than open spots on a trip, the Treasurer will take the sign-ups in the order of the mail cancellation date, adding anyone over the limit to the waiting list in the order the checks were received.
INDICATE ON YOUR CHECK THE TRIP IT IS FOR AND INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS. SEND DEPOSIT PAYMENTS TO: CIWC, P.O. Box 91, McCordsville, IN 46055
The BALANCE of the trip fee is due by the cancellation date. If you do not pay by this date, we reserve the right to give your spot to someone on the waiting list who has paid in full. IF YOU HAVE TO CANCEL FOR ANY REASON, CONTACT: the Treasurer and the trip leader. If you do so by the cancellation date, we refund your money in full. Cancellation after that date will result in loss of part or all of the required deposit, depending on the status of any outfitter’s fees involved. You will be contacted when CIWC receives your check. Contact Trip Sign Up ([masked]) if you need to confirm you are on a trip, on the waiting list, or if you need to cancel.

WHAT IS CIWC’S POLICY REGARDING CHILDREN ON TRIPS?


Parent/guardian must check with the Trip Leader regarding the suitability of a trip for children. Trip Leaders, in considering safety, terrain, and demanding activities, may elect not to include children on a trip. Children who do participate in club trips must be accompanied by a parent/guardian responsible for their safety. The child’s guardian must sign the waiver/release of liability before embarking on a club outing. Children participate in many club activities including family outings, membership meetings, day hikes and some overnight camping trips. Multi-day trips are reserved for youth with experience in these strenuous activities.
Most trip postings indicate family & difficulty ratings: - Adults Only - High School Youth OK – must have experience and be supervised by parent/guardian - Younger Kids OK


HOW WILL I KNOW THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF A TRIP?


Most trips indicate the Difficulty Rating:
Trip Difficulty Rating Scale: - Beginning – easy trip, most participants could handle - Intermediate – physically demanding, participants must be in good physical condition - Difficult – very demanding, participants need to be in top condition
Some trips may have additional information about what types of conditions can be expected and the level of experience and/or physical fitness that may be required. As always, you can contact trip leaders for additional information about trips.

After you RSVP to a trip it is important that you send either the deposit or required amount for the trip to secure your position. Most trips have a maximum number of participants and the determination of who goes is based upon receipt of the payment.
