Primitive Fire, Basic and Advanced With Jim Blizzard

Who: Jim Blizzard
When: 1st and 3rd Sundays - 2/17/, 3/3, 3/17, 4/7, and 4/21 1-4pm

Learn to make fire without matches, and along the way learn more about nature and yourself! We start with the basics of friction fire, learning the techniques, materials, and attitude, and move gradually toward the goal of being able to make fire with no tools and materials other than those we find in nature. For many thousands of years our ancestors used fire to cook food, stay warm, purify water, and make light at night. You can learn to do it, too. No age limitations, but younger folks should be accompanied by responsible adults. Bring water and snacks, and dress for the weather.

Thanks Naomi! Glad you came. Ithaca weather is always the same - sort of - anything can happen any time! Snow in June some years, or swimming in March like last year. Hope you have time to practice your skills. Once you can get a coal easily, then a whole new world opens up - and all of your friends will be totally jealous! (not a real reason to do it, just an "unintended consequence.")

Hi Jim, unfortunately, I will not be available today, I have to go in at 1030 this morning. I am very disappointed, but I will make one of the fire classes, even if I have to take a day off to do it. Enjoy the day, and I look forward to getting up there soon.

Hi Vincent, join in any time you can. I am expecting beginners to come to each class, but will teach some of the more primitive skills each time, too. You will learn plenty to practice at home after any class. Once you get started feel free to send me questions, or brag about new things you learn! I love learning and teaching the skills.

do I need to bring anything?

Warm clothes and footwear would be good to have. The temperature is predicted to be in the twenties. Bring a sturdy knife if you have one, otherwise you can borrow one. Maybe a notebook. Water and snacks. You might get a chance to roast something on a fire.

Really wanted to attend these but wish they didn't conflict with out Use the Whole Animal Workshop... hopefully I'll get in on a later one but then won't have the basic skills if they're gonna be advanced should i still plan on going to the later ones?

Hi Leslie, I'll keep doing some basic work each session. Also the next fire class is in the same place as the whole animal workshop. I can stick around afterwards for you and anyone else that wants to get a start on the basic skills. I am hoping to put some training material on my web site as I get time. For now, I put a simple course outline there that could stimulate some thought and questions.

Sounds great, I'd really appreciate it. If Wx is ok to make for a later nite return I'd be up for that (live almost 2 hrs away). Will check it out again. Thx

Hi folks - I plan to keep doing some basic training each session, but the later classes will have more time devoted to advanced skills. I might have to come early or stay late some days to get it all done!
