BRAND NEW WEIGHT LOSS GROUP - The "Mona Lisa Group" is our new sub-group to go hand in hand with our walking club - read details filed under “Pages” at the top. This group is designed for people who wish to shed a few pounds or who are interested in eating healthfully and improving or maintaining their health. Making new friends, always a bonus!
No, we do not walk 6 miles (well... sometimes we do). In 2014 we averaged about 3.5 miles per walk/hike. That translates into about 2 hours total of walking or hiking.
The goal of this walking club is to get off the sofa and move! ANY length of walk or hike is regarded as a noble goal, as an improvement, as a benefit to our health and outlook.
The vision for our Club is to motivate each other to become more active, explore, enjoy fresh air, maintain good health and a happy frame of mind, make new acquaintances, form friendships and enjoy group gatherings.
Let our motto be:
"Mens sana in corpore sano" - which is Latin for "I really need to get off the sofa!"
Our walks and hikes, will vary in speed, depending on that day's participants. As a rule, and at all times, we stay together as a group and enjoy each other's conversation as well as getting to know each other, even if it means walking or hiking slower that day. Regardless, everybody wins.
We seem to enjoy ending each walk or hike with a small social event, be that a coffee, a meal at a restaurant, a picnic, an ice cream. What better way to make new friends!
The name SIX MILE DOCTOR WALKING CLUB is an homage to honor Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw - a true humanitarian, who walked six miles in a blizzard to reach his hospital and perform life saving brain surgery.
Here is an article from the January 28, 2015 edition of the "Birmingham News" written on the first year anniversary of Dr. Hrynkiw's fateful walk. Our Club happens to be mentioned in this article.
