This month, millions of Americans will see images of ancient Bethlehem in nativity scenes celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Skip Schiel, a professional filmmaker and photographer, has traveled and photographed in Israel and Palestine over the last five years. His latest slide show portrays the reality of Bethlehem today, a city under military occupation, surrounded by a 25-foot high concrete wall and checkpoints which restrict movement in and out of the city.

Skip Schiel has been documenting the Palestinian and Israeli reality through photographs and journal postings since 2003—work with a better feel for the detailed texture of life in Gaza and the West Bank than any appearing in US media.

    •  The media program, with photographs and narrative from the city of Bethlehem, was powerful. We should have had at least one hundred people there because the time was well spent during a very busy month. Maybe we can host Skip again at another time in another venue, where we can capitalize on more members from the faith communities. The issues that were raised were important ones. I would have enjoyed hearing more about the Skip's delegation from Cambridge, MA, which had several Jewish members. I think that we could begin a dialogue between Christians, Muslims, and Jews in this community about these issues. Talking with others of different perspectives is the first step to understanding.
    •  It was a very good presentation that demonstrated the ongoing conflict in Bethlehem and the West Bank with clarity. Nicely done.
