Inaugural Travel Meetup

Let's get together for dinner and discussion about how to make this travel meetup be successful.

We have a private room reserved for 7pm at Marco Polo in East Hartford.  The restaurant is easy to get to (very close to Rt 84) and the food is always good.  They have a variety of choices ranging from appetizers to sandwiches to entrees.  Marco Polo has been very accomodating so far, allowing us to order off the menu (most places wanted us to have a fixed banquet menu).

Since it's a private room, we'll have the opportunity to mix and mingle, get to know others interested in travel and start to talk about how to plan our first trip.  I will have a few assignments for you while you are there that'll help us get started on the right foot.

I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone!

We're going to be in the banquet room at Marco Polo. Park in the back of the building and come in through the back door.

How will we handle our orders? Everyone on a separate check? Perhaps we should all be prepared with cash (I know I usually don't carry cash)?

    December 3, 2012

    • Karen

Thanks for the suggestion! I just sent everyone some additional details on the meetup and I'm asking everyone to bring cash. The restaurant agreed to do one bill per table.

Carol - It looks like your RSVP is a Yes but your note sounds more like a No. Can you update your RSVP by tomorrow with your final status? Thanks! I'm just trying to get a solid number for the restaurant.

What is the best travel agent for cruises? Orbitz constantly gives one price, but as you book they dramatically change the price....

Pat Giordano from CKI - tell her you got her no. form Havital - pronounced Ha-vi-tal - she will hook you up - her cell no. is[masked] or office[masked]

I used to use Travelocity for their search engine (though it's been a while). Then go direct to the cruise line site for the best price once you know the trip you want.

Unfortunately I have to be out of town on that day (at least I'll be warm in Arizona). Somebody earlier mentioned cruising 'single'...For everyone’s edification, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) has a 'studio' cabin aimed at single travelers. I know the NCL Epic has them, and I think one other ship. I'm sailing the Epic next week (Thanksgiving cruise)...will let you know how it was if I ever make a MeetUp ;-)

    November 12, 2012

    • Matt

This is my 9th cruise (4th on NCL, 2nd single). I leave Saturday from Miami for seven nights (St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Nassau, and three ‘sea days’). It’s actually a ‘singles cruise’ with a travel group that I’ve been out with before. So it’s not the whole ship, just a group of people traveling together (that have never met before…it’s a travel agency). I wanted to try out the Studio cabin and ship because this same ship sails the Med in the summertime. And I’ve never been to the Virgin Islands…Nassau on the other hand…meh, I may not even leave the ship that day ;)

@Dave, I’ve flown ‘military’, but never cruised that way. Happy belated Veteran’s Day BTW. I fly to Arizona (Phoenix or Tucson) at least once a month, sometimes twice, for work. I like it out there also.
@Julianna, Enjoy the Infinity, I did the Millennium in February. I kinda like Celebrity, probably cruise with them again sometime.
@Kristine, I’ll be sure to post something on the boards when I get back ;) Particularly from the angle of a single traveler.

I don't know if I can make first meeting, but will try. I thought that I'd weigh in on hostels. I've stayed in them in both Europe and the US. You can choose to share with up to 16 people (not for me!) or you can have a private room in some places. (I had one in Dublin.) Not all have bunk beds but many do. I like the experience of meeting people I wouldn't otherwise, including the people that run the hostel; they can usually give you inside info re: things not to miss.

My next trip (I hope) is Australia in 2013. This club sounds like it will be fun.

Most Panera's have large spaces to use for something like this. I've used both the ones in Manchester and the one in West Hartford before. What's nice is that people can get a bite or a beverage, we can bring our laptops and we don't need a reservation or have to worry about staying too long.

    October 25, 2012

    • Greg

I like that idea - the Panera in Bishop's Corner has a large area in back. The only problem I could anticipate is that we're not the only one that knows its there :-). That place is busy 24/7 but if we get there at the right time its a good call.

For a group the size we expecting, we might be better of with reservations. Many restaurants have back rooms you can arrange to have meetings in.

      October 26, 2012

  • Karen

Greg - thanks for the note in your RSVP. I've added a comment above that this meetup will be somewhere in the Hartford area (but probably not Hartford itself).

    October 25, 2012

  • Karen

Amazing response to this meetup! I'm going to get to work on finding a place large enough for us and yet quiet enough to talk. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

I've stayed in the Hostels on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket many times before and checked out Hostels in other places (I actually have a hostel membership that gets me some benefits). At this point in my life, I'd rather not sleep in bunkbeds with 11 other people in the room. Sometimes Hostels will have larger or smaller rooms that accommodate more or less occupants, but still typically use bunkbeds.

I agree Susanne. I have taken 3 - 30 day trips in the past 18 months. The hotel cost is the highest. I was looking at other options. Go too cheap on hotels and you may end up with a guest you don't want. Never happened to me but it is a concern. Some suggested Hostels. I want to do a 2 week cruise. But having to pay for two people when I am alone turns out to be too expensive. It is good to find out how other's have handled these type of issues....

From my experience of living in Paris for almost 10 years and having traveled extensively from there, I've stayed in hundreds of hotels all over the world. What I found was that in Egypt a 3-star (at leas the one I was in) was more like a 1-star in France. A 3-star in France used to be pretty good, meaning safe, clean and in a good location. In Rome, we had the "Presidential Suite" in a hotel that was recommended to us, and we both got bed bug bites and the breakfast was the worst we had ever had - anywhere.

Regarding the convent: One of them was about $35 per person. The rooms were immaculate and larger than any hotel room I have ever stayed in while in Rome. Unfortunately, the nuns did not speak a word of english, but we were able to understand that we had a curfew. There was a bus stop just outside the convent door. We could see St. Peter's from our room. Each floor had a community room and a kitchen. the kitchen had a refrigerator, microwave, etc. The convent did provide breakfast--cold cereal, coffee, rolls, etc. There was a seminary next door. Maybe it wasn't a seminary, but some kind of what would you call a group of religious men--monks, brothers--not sure, but they did not have a curfew. We could watch them from our room after 11 pm playing tennis. the two facilities were separated by 15 foot brick walls. It was really a great place to stay and I would do it again. Met a lot of interesting people.

I am interested in a cruise in the Caribbean. They all want to charge double for a single traveler. Picked up my passport for international travel. I have always wanted to do England. So much history. I have heard of staying at Hostels. Anyone ever stay in one? Dave
