Little Wild Horse Canyon near Goblin Valley, Utah

Photos from 3 years ago when we did this hike.

This hike is rated a BLUE as it is NOT EASY but NOT DIFFICULT. It is a beautiful slot canyon near Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. It's an 8 mile hike thru Little Wild Horse and Bell Canyons that almost everyone can enjoy. Dogs are discouraged since there is some bouldering required in a couple of areas. Wet shoes are very possible since water will be in several areas, but nothing too deep. This may turn into a campout if there is enough interest. There is another amazing hike. Please let me know if you're interested in the campout. Campsites at Goblin Valley State Park are full.

Chuck! Love Gumby and Pokey among the goblins! Great shots. And your night shots are great. What exposure time/ap did you do?

The thing that separated this hike from others is the spirit of service the more advanced hikers showed us, in helping everybody through a hike together!

Any campers will be hiking around Goblin Valley early in the morning. We will meetup with the group coming over from GJ Saturday morning about 10:30. I expect this hike to take about 6 hours with this size group. That puts people back in GJ about 7:30pm.

What is the approximate time of arrival at the WHC Trailhead?

    April 3, 2014

    • Daniel

Lisa, I'm expecting it to take about 2.5 hours to get to the LWH trailhead. So, around 10:45am should be close.

Chuck it looks like there will be 3 of us camping at Goblin Valley SP. See if you can get 1 spot for us all to share. I think we can only have 2 vehicles so one would have to be parked at the entrance. If you want to get two sites thats fine, I will pay the fee for the extra site. I will be coming over but it will be 7-7:30 before I arrive. [masked]

OK. Once I do, or don't, get a site or two, I will text your phone number (and anyone else who wishes to provide me theirs too) with results.

Is anyone planning on going Saturday morning?

    April 1, 2014

  • Chuck C.

Yes I'm planning on an early departure Friday. I shall see when I get there where we might camp ( in the state park or the outback). p.s. I drive a blue Toyota Sienna - a soccer mom van ;-)

I am going to try to leave sometime between noon and 4pm Friday (kinduva large window). That should put me on wild horse between 3-7pm. I am in a pewter silver hyundai santa fe suv. Chuck, are you still looking to camp? Anyone else looking to arrive Friday?

Thanks Tami ...and I was glad for an opportunity to put in a plug for our CVVC Hike group!

Correction! The billboard is at the intersection after turning off the highway and before turning "south" towards the state park! Check for messages there. You may even want to leave the color and make of the vehicle you'll be in. Much easier to find each other out there. Signs work well too.

  • Chuck C.

Sounds like a plan. Oh, and I'll be doing some star-photography. If anyone else is interested, you'll need to bring a tripod and be able to set your camera for a 30-second exposure, push up the ASA/ISO, and set it to manual -focus. If that doesn't make sense, I'm available for questions.

I've stayed at the campground and also camped on BLM close by. While the campground is more comfortable, "boondockin" can still be great. Bring a shovel or trowel for burying waste although there are a few vault toilets. There are many great spots amongst the rock walls and crevices. Bring plenty of water. I'm not sure there is cell phone coverage in the area. There is a billboard after turning off the highway, before turning north towards the state park. I suggest messages be left on that billboard for others (bring paper and marker). I am still not sure if I'll be camping but am hoping I'll be able to at least come out for the day. If you get campsites Chuck, the billboard would be a good place to let others know.

My daughter will not be coming so I will hope to leave early that Friday to check on getting one or more campsites. Here in advance is my phone so y'all can ask if I get one.... Or should it be 2 sites?[masked]

I would live to pitch a tent by the group as opposed to off on my own. May i join your site/general area?

      March 23, 2014

  • Chuck C.

Don't know yet - but I might just be able to depart at sunrise that day to get sites... Just depends if my teen daughter is coming... stay tuned for future developments. :-0

Hi Christine, first have a look at the link I sent. Primitive camping means bring your own toilet alternative and no showers. Check for yourself but the state campground seems full. We can talk Saturday on the Fisher Towers hike as I too would like to camp where others are.

    March 18, 2014

    • Christine J.

Saturday sounds like a plan to chat. I'm primitive from age 5. I just stared staying in state park campgrounds 3 years ago. Feels a bit fancy for me, lol. Though i do like bear boxes. I just happen to like when i can drive to the state park or nearby for a quick shower. I'm not going to die without it, but it is nice if its no more than 20miles roundtrip especially after a potentially sweaty utah day. That said, i've never hiked utah other than 100plus degree july's. I've been to goblin, but am not too familiar with other surrounding areas- which is why i asked. The map doesnt exactly have scale or direction. I will try to find a good surrounding map to bring saturday.

The campground is full. I am on the notification for any openings. There is the "walk up service" which allows first come first serve the day of. There are 6 sites that are available daily through the walk up service. The earlier someone gets there the more likely we are to get a site. We should try to get a site using the walk up service, which starts at 9am. Is anyone available to go over early Friday morning? Each camp site allows 2 cars and 8 people for $30. I will be in the Hotel Land Rover.

I just looked at camping availability and it seems the state park campground is full... but a description of primitive campsites there can be found at http://www.outdoorsinutah.com/goblinvalley-camping.htm
Oh fearless Navigator, would you be camping in one of these mentioned areas - in yer Hotel Land Rover? How about anyone else?

    March 17, 2014

    • Christine J.

Chuck, I would like to pitch a tent, too. is the map the camp sites? l want to book by everyone else. that said, it would be nice to be by the SP so I can zip over for a shower.=)

Hi. I want to make Friday night camping reservations where ya'll are camping... any guidance? I think the reservations website asks to specific a loop or campsite specifically, or otherwise "any site".

I am really interested in joining this adventure. Does anyone know of a good dog sitter in the Grand Junction or Fruita area that may be registered with www.Rover.com (online registered dog sitting referrals)
