Every Friday at noon we gather at Cafe la Boheme to write together around a table, to a prompt drawn from the hat, in a circle, and we read aloud what we have written, and nobody comments on what anybody writes. For prompts, we write short phrases on scraps of paper and fold them and put them in a hat the center of the table. Somebody sets a timer and picks a prompt at random and reads it aloud. Everybody writes. When the timer goes off we go around the table and read aloud one by one. We've been doing this since since March 27, 2009. We just read aloud. Then the next person picks a prompt and reads it aloud and we write and keep doing that until 1 p.m. Then we're done. Anybody can come. Anybody with a lunch break can fit it in their schedule. It's free. We write and read aloud to each other just to do it. We don't do it to get commentary on our work. We don't discuss the work. Sometimes somebody will laugh or sigh but that's it. We just read. It's a quiet demonstration of the primacy of the creative act in everyday life. It happens every week regardless. It's always there. Every Friday, a little before noon. Cafe la Boheme, 24th Street at Mission, San Francisco.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
