What is the purpose of education?

“Education is the key to success” is a mantra of our society, but does this always hold true? What lessons can phenomenally successful people without academic qualifications teach us? Does education lead to equality of opportunity? How should we educate our children (and particularly those who struggle to attain their potential)? Whose responsibility is it? Should we embrace more radical education policies?

Would love to come to this discussion but I don't know what time I shall be back in Bristol that evening. Advance apologies if I don't make it!

Hi Peter. Unfortunately I'm not free the following week, and as quite a few people have said they're coming along I don't want to disrupt their plans. I'm sure we'll revisit this topic in one way or another at some point though.

Plutarch in On Listening to Lectures: "The correct analogy for the mind is not a vessel that needs filling, but wood that needs igniting — no more — and then it motivates one towards originality and instills the desire for truth."
