Concept-to-Cash: Driving Value with Lean at iStockphoto with Scott Gibson-Craig

Abstract and Agenda:

iStockphoto is one of the most exciting, and yet underreported, made-in-Calgary success stories. Founded in 2000 by Bruce Livingstone for the purposes of distributing stock photographic images, it eventually grew to attract the attention of Getty Images of Seattle.  This eventually concluded in iStockphoto’s acquisition in 2006 for $50 million.  Since that time, iStockphoto/Getty Images has been progressively incorporated into Getty Images’ worldwide organization, and is a significant provider of services to their operations around the globe.  And yet, iStockphoto remains headquartered here in Calgary.  We wanted to CAMUG members to hear this inspiring story.

Scott Gibson-Craig, Manager of Application Development at Getty Images, will provide a first-hand overview of iStockphoto/Getty Images.  His talk will then address one of today’s emerging Agile methodologies: Lean.  It is a concept that has been around the manufacturing industry for decades and is beginning to work its way into more and more IT and technology companies.  Scott will share not only the core principals of this philosophy but how iStockphoto/Getty Images is putting it into practice by getting ideas from "Concept-to-Cash".

About Scott Gibson-Craig:

Scott has been with iStockphoto/Getty Images for the past four years, first as Senior Application Developer, then as Application Team Lead and then in his current role with the organization.  During this time, iStockphoto/Getty Images became one of the top 500 busiest sites on the Internet.  Over the last year he has been part of the team that been helping transform the organization from Waterfall to a Lean/Agile organization that focuses on delivering value.  Prior to iStockphoto/Getty Images, Scott was Senior Developer at another Calgary-based web startup, where he helped to grow their traffic to 60 million page views per month.

Scott provided a fascinating glimpse inside the software development group at iStockphoto/Getty Images. I think many are envious of the fact that he has just embarked a significant new product development effort, and which is going to be used in Getty operations around the globe.

Thanks for a great presentation and for taking the time to come and visit with us. We would be delighted to have you back next year to report on how things have gone with your new product, and with Lean development at iStockphoto/Getty Images. Until then, we hope to see you at upcoming CAMUG sessions.
