Much Ado About Nothing

Joss Whedon's retelling of the Shakespeare romantic comedy gets a modern facelift and features his friends from Buffy, Angel, Firefly and The Avengers. Apparently Whedon shot this over a week at his Santa Monica home while waiting for post-production to wrap on The Avengers. Pretty interesting, if you ask me. The black and white photography really gives it that Lubitsch screwball comedy feel.

Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk5kkLNPg8g

It's also received generally positive reviews: http://www.metacritic.com/movie/much-ado-about-nothing

So the movie will be at Eau Claire all week and plays at around 5:55. If anybody can think of a more reasonable day and time, I'm all ears.

so how was it? did Whedon do Mr. Shakespeare justice? did the comedy translate, was it actually funny? or just over-wrought?

It was really good. One of the better movies of the year so far, for me. It's a very good adaptation and captures the essence of Shakespeare, but Whedon's touch is also clearly present, and there's a lot of added humour (slapstick and so on). Great performances, really well-shot, and so on. Totally worth seeing.

thx for the replies. i checked and this doesn't seem to be screening anymore :( any inside loop on when/if it's screening again in calgary or where i can watch online? modernized Shakespeare when done well is great! like when Baz Lurhman did Romeo & Juliet in the 90's, that's my Shakespeare benchmark for sure.

Got home just now, and won't be able to get to the theatre on time.. it's like a 25 min walk, and I don't want to risk missing any of the movie. I guess I'll just have to go another day.

Actually, uh, never mind.. I guess I will come. You posted the time as 5:15.. so I thought that's when the movie starts. I now see that it doesn't start til 5:55pm. So I can make it if I start walking now.

Sorry about the last minute change. I'm exhausted. Many short nights and early mornings. Think I need to chill and get to bed really early tonight.

Just remembered I have a work stampede thing and timing would be Ito close for me to make it. Next time!

I was also wrong about Frances Ha opening this week. I think it should be in theatres here next Friday (most-likely The Globe), but I'm not 100% sure about that.

We'll definitely schedule a meetup for Frances Ha, whenever it starts showing here

We definitely should. I'm hoping it opens this Friday.

I have a 4:30 appointment, so I may be a few minutes late getting to Eau Claire. Where is the meet-up place going to be?

I suppose the same place as the last meetup, by the chairs and tables right in front of the short flight of stairs to the movie theatres and concession stand.

Yeah, this looks like it'll be interesting at the very least. I've announced your suggested meetup to the group now, so hopefully the time you've suggested works for others as well. I should be able to make it.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
