YABP Meet Up: North Calgary

Last meetup we had six people show up. Member Russ had the furthest to get to the meetup (which was located not far from Downtown) so I asked him to pick a location that would work for him. This has the added benefit of moving around the city. This time we'll be in the North end.

Maybe you have a presentation you want to give or know of a venue that would work better than Boston Pizza (chosen because its all ages, has parking and has options for people with food allergies) please leave a comment below.

Last time was a meet and greet, but I sense that people want more out of this group. Is there something we can try to do this time that would make it better? Leave a comment. Thanks.

I know Wilson suggested bars downtown (in the forum) and I don't want to seem like I'm ignoring that. If anyone wants to meet anywhere using this group, that would be great. Anyone should be able to schedule a meetup from the front page of this site. I think its set so that if three people say they'll attend it gets announced to the whole group. Seriously this is your group so by all means use this feature.

    Hey

It was great to meet everyone last weekend. Towards the end of the meet there were a few of us discussing various games. I brought up a couple of indie games I've played over the last few months that expanded my perspective on what a video game could be. I posted these games over at the website if anyone is interested in checking them out (one is $5, the other is free): http://www.calgarygamedevelopers.com/discussion/#/discussion/19/unique-indie-games I don't want to spam peoples inboxes so I won't send anymore of these types of emails. I'm going to update the thread on the website as I come across other unique games and encourage others to do so as well. I know there are only a handful of posts on the website now...I don't know if anyone would be interested in having a similar thread on the meet up discussion section?

Thanks Craig for organizing this. I hope to be able to attend more of these in the future. Great to meet all the people in the group.

i really wanted to come, but wife has a bridal shower I didn't know about :( I'm getting very close to finishing my design docs for a new age platformer I'd like to share at some point.

@Russ: That sounds great. I'd be down to help test anyone's Android games. Unfortunately I don't own any iDevices other than a MBP, but I'd still love to see what you are working on Russ.

@Andrew: I think it would be awesome in the future if some game jam teams emerged out of this group or if those who don't have projects already collectively worked on something. Might be a hard sell to those who are already working on their own stuff. I think that's what you were getting at. Good suggestion though.

    Hey Everyone,

Not too sure if there is any sort of schedule setup for the next meet up but I wouldn't mind presenting an iOS project I've been working on for the last few months. I've still got a bit work to go on it so I'm not ready to beta test yet, but I am looking for some input from some other perspectives. I don't know who else is working on an iOS or Android game but thought it might be nice to setup a Test Flight account for this group so that those who are interested can play test others' projects more easily. This would also allow members like Andrew and Philippe who are not in Calgary to still be a part of the community.

Not that I will be around for much longer (I'm not dying, just leaving Calgary). What I thought would be cool is that collectively work on a game. There are some people who know a lot about programming and some who want to learn a little more about game programming.
And having a relaxed environment is always the best way to learn(sorry a little cheesy) and have a good time.

Not this one, but ANY OTHER I will make it work! I'm not in town that day.

I joined because I'm interested in the group! However, I cannot make it this time as I am in Vancouver at the Academy of Music.

But I hope there will be more chances!

My schedule is fairly flexible so I can generally meet up whenever/wherever, although weeknights would also work best for me in the future. I also think having access to a projector/mic would be great too, for anyone wanting to share a W.I.P or give some other presentation.

@Craig - I hadn't really thought about that...was kinda more interested in just hanging out with the community. BUT - if there is sufficient interest - then some "presentations" might not be a bad idea...at least "Q&A"'s or something like that.

I did a presentation on Mobile Gaming Myths for Mobile Monday a couple of months ago. I could easily do it again if there's interest.

I'd love to see other people's games, and I'm particularly interested in Nick's current game and lessons from the kickstarter...

@Nick Initially I started this just to hang out and talk about our game projects. I don't know if people expect or want more. One person (I'd have to look up a name, but I'm on my phone on vacation right now) mentioned they had a presentation if we'd like to see it sometime. I think other groups do presentations. Heck if we had a projector we could even show off our own games, which might be nice. Just trying to accommodate all ideas.

I'm ok with any day of the week, though Fridays it's probably busy there.

Presentations? Tuesday or Thursdays work best for me...but that being said - any day of the week in the evening works fine. (except wednesdays)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll make the August meetup during the week. I want to facilitate everyone, but of course everyone has different schedules. Do you guys have a day that works best? (day of the week)

I like the Melrose on 17th idea if they have a set up for presentations.

    July 8, 2013

  • Radu M.

Weekends are tentative at best for me as well. It's easier to get away from the kids during week nights.

I enjoyed the setup/time of Mobile Mondays which happens at Melrose on 17th and they have a projector setup / mic if anyone wants to present.

During the week the lower level is also very quiet (closed?).

Is there any interest for a during the week meetup?

Sorry dude... I Work on Saturdays so will NEVER be able to attend a Saturday meetup.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
