XC Ski: Emerald Lake

XC Saturday!!! This time, we'll take advantage of the trackset trails out by Emerald Lake. We'll do a loop on the lake, and around the fan, and then cruise down to Field before heading home. Ideally we'll leave a car at Field unless we want to add 10km to the ski. ;-)

This is a good trip for those who already know how to snowplow and herringbone. There is a short stretch (~1km) that is not groomed due to avalanche risk, but we'll keep an eye on it and stay safe.

Note: Location may change, or event may be cancelled depending upon the conditions.

Rating: XC Ski (D3)
Distance: 18 km
Elevation gain: ? m
Time: 4 - 5 hours skiing (+ driving time; 2.5h one way)

Hey everyone! MEC is completely out of xc skis, and for some reason the Calgary Outdoor Centre was closed tonight when I tried to call them around 6... They open at 8am tomorrow so I will try to get a last minute rental and meet you guys for 9. I really wanna hit the mountains!! Also, if anyone has an extra pair of xc skis they wouldn't mind loaning me for the trip I would be really grateful! Hope to see you all tomorrow :)

Clearly the people up at Emerald Lake know we're coming, and have just yesterday trackset the trails for us! ;-) Forecast has a high of -1oC (low -7oC), and 3 - 5cm of snow. Looks like we've enough drivers (so I won't return to Calgary and instead stay up at Lake Louise Sat. night). We'll sort out carpooling tomorrow - see you at 9am at Brentwood!

Do you think I could keep up by skiing outside of the xc tracks? I'd like to explore yoho but I have touring skis, 13.5 cm wide.

Hi Jeff, I've called the parks people and they figure there'll be enough room alongside the tracks for you to use your touring skis, but figured you might have a more enjoyable time with nordic skis (full pkg rentals is about $20 from the Outdoor Center). I've not skied with you, so I don't know your abilities, but either way I'm sure you'll be able to keep up. Let me know if you've other questions!
