Hike: Prairie Creek, Powderface Ridge

  • Brentwood LRT Station - Pay & P

Crowchild Trail & 32 Avenue NW, Calgary, AB (map)

    51.044495 -114.063232

  • I will be driving a white Nissan Versa. My cell number is (403)[masked]
  • Recover from all the late night partying with an easy hike up the rolling creekbeds, and then back along Powderface Ridge. A great trek while the conditions are still questionable. Only the distance makes it a bit more challenging. Will have to watch the timing as the sunsets at 6pm now-a-days! Provided there are enough drivers, this will be a (short) shuttle trip.

A good level of fitness is required as the pace is moderate to fast. Please be realistic about your abilities. You must be able to commit to the entire event.

    Rating: Difficult (D5)
    Distance: 19 km
    Elevation gain: 450 m
Time: 5-7 hrs (+ driving time: 1h one way)

    More info:

Access Hwy 66 either from Hwy 22X, or the Hwy 22 from Bragg Creek. 22 km west along Hwy 66, you'll encounter Powderface Trail road. At the junction of Hwy. 66 (Elbow Falls Trail) and Powderface Trail (road) is a small parking area on the north side.  (Google Maps)

Leave a message in the comments if you'd like to meet up in the south end of town (Somerset-Bridlewood LRT station), rather than the north end.

You must sign a trip waiver and contact information form to attend this event. The event organizer will have this for you.

Forecast hasn't improved, and as you can see its dreadful outside. Unfortunately sometimes the weather prevents us from taking trips, and this is just one of those days.

Forecast is predicting 20cm of snow in Calgary, Bragg Creek (roughly en route) and Turner Valley tomorrow. Unless the forecast changes, I'm not sure its the best idea to be on the roads, especially as not everyone will have their winters on (I know I don't). If it goes ahead, who is leaving from Cochrane & meeting us there? Who is meeting at Brentwood, and who is meeting in the south end of town?

The forecast hasn't really changed any - they still think it'll be 15-20 cm of snow in all regions between here and where we're hiking (which means the roads will suck and we'll be lucky if we can see the trail). We can see how it looks in the morning (I'll update again at 9am), but it may be best to make other plans.

Yes, the idea is to leave at 10am, but the conditions/forecast need to severely change between tonight and tomorrow morning.
