XC Ski - Intro: TBD (Best Snow)

Its early season yet, but the snow is already starting to open up the cross country trails. (Nakiska opens Oct 27!) We're off on an easy ski wherever the best snow is (ie. Location TBD - Lake Louise? Kananskis?) - ideally something trackset.

This trip is geared towards a leisurely ski: stretch the legs, see what the snow is like, and if you're new to the activity, maybe get some tips/pointers from those who've ski'd more regularly. The event host will ski at the back of the pack; advanced xc skiers can go further as desired. This is not backcountry skiing and the location will not require avalanche training or equipment.

Warning #1: This is not a professionally guided trip, and there will not be a certified instructor present - you partake at your own risk. Professional drop in lessons are offered at the Canmore Nordic Center, and there are numerous courses offered throughout the season.

Warning #2: Location may change, or event may be cancelled if there is insufficient snow or the roads are closed.

Warning #3: Daylight savings occurs this weekend. Set your clocks back the night before!

A good level of fitness is required - please be realistic about your abilities. You must be able to commit to the entire event.

DETAILS:

Rating: Easy XC Ski
Distance: TBD
Elevation gain: TBD
Time: 3 - 5 hours (+ driving time; up to 2h one way)

Additional info:
http://skierbob.ca/

EQUIPMENT:

  • XC skis, boots, poles, waxes (as necessary)
  • Proper seasonal wear (dress in layers, mitts, toque, snow pants etc, spare socks)
  • Lunch, snacks and water (+ tea/coffee)
  • Sun glasses, sunscreen, SPF-rated chap stick
  • No jeans, no cotton clothing of any kind!

Gear can be rented at UofC Outdoor Center or MEC. Please pick up equipment before the meetup time.

I recommended renting waxless skis if you're new to the sport. (The early snow makes waxing even trickier).

DRIVING AND DIRECTIONS:
We will meet at the in-Calgary meeting point and carpool from there. Please be on time as we will only wait a short while past past the departure time before we leave.

Location: TBD (Directions will be available from the event host).

WAIVER:
You must sign a trip waiver and contact information form to attend this event. The event organizer will have these for you.

Not a bad ski for November 4th.

Fyi: the weather network says its raining at LL currently, which may drown the conditions (unless it decides to fall as snow). ie. Its still early in the ski season so trails are variable. The nordic centre may also be an option. We can discuss it at the parking lot tomorrow morning. :)

I was really excited to see this meetup! I'm in decent shape from other sports, but am definitely not speedy...will this be ok?

Its an intro ski, so no worries about speed. See you tomorrow morning!

It looks like we'll be off to the Lake Louise area - most likely the Great Divide trail (out to BC and back?) though Moraine Lake Road is just up the way. The temperatures haven't been above 0oC all week, and they've had enough snow to pack (but not yet trackset) the trails. They will likely be skier set. The Banff trail report says the conditions are icy, but the word from Skier Bob this week indicates soft but decent.

I recommend waxless skis if you have them, otherwise waxing conditions maybe a bit tricky. If you've got snow tires and haven't put them on your car yet, try to do so - there'll be 2-4cm of snow tomorrow at L.L. *** Remember daylight savings tomorrow*** See you at 9am new time (8am old time)!

Hey Erika have you decided the location? I heard the trails up in Lake Louise are not in good conditions due to the warm weather.

Hi Francisco, with something like this, sometimes its very last minute (eg. at the parking lot) to decide. However, the conditions for Lake Louise are looking fantastic (went last weekend, and they were good; they've not gone above 0 since, and have had snowfall as well!). You can read more on the link in the description. I'll update more tomorrow.

Hello CONS, for those of you renting gear this weekend, remember to phone ahead and reserve the gear, do not show up Sunday and expect them to have extra gear, they frequently get booked up!

As a follow up - you need to have your gear with you and ready to go when we meet at the parking lot. If you don't, either you won't be able to attend, or you will have to make your own way to the trailhead and attempt to catch up.

Hey, I have to be back to pick someone up from the airport at 3:30. Hopefully it will work with timings. I guess I will see when we decide where to go :) Can't wiat to get out in the snow!

Hi Louisa, with a 9am departure, say 2hrs to Lake Louise, 3-5 hrs skiing, and 2hrs back, we'll be later than 3:30pm. However, you can certainly join us, and always turn back in time to get back to Calgary. Keep in mind that with winter, weather can change and impact driving conditions.

Drivers, please make sure that the number of passengers you can take include their skis. (eg. My car can normally take 4-5, but with skis is 3-4, incl. me). Please let me know if the numbers need to change.
