Larch Valley -- Sentinel Pass -- Paradise Valley
Distance: 16.7 km (total)
Elevation gain: 724 m

Start at Moraine Lake and hike up to Larch Valley and then to Sentinel Pass. This is a very scenic hike and there are great views from Sentinel Pass of Wenkchemna Peaks and Mount Fay. Descend down Sentinel Pass into Paradise Valley and hike out Paradise Creek to the Moraine Lake Road. A car shuttle will be required. We will need a group of at least four, preferably six or 10, because of grizzly bear concerns. Bring the usual hiking gear: sturdy boots, extra layers, lunch, and water. This is in a national park so you'll need a park pass. Meet at the FRONT DOORS OF THE PETRO CANADA SERVICE STATION.

I had a great day with lots of laughs. I would suggest a much earlier start for future trips in the Lake Louise area or Yoho National Park. I was ok with Leslie's decision late in the day to the Giant Steps as we were so close.

Thanks, Mark, for your feedback. Great suggestion ... you're right, in the future, we'll have an earlier start. Please read my latest post about the message from Michael ... he says that Parks Canada closed the lower trail for regeneration ... this change was not reflected on my map ... that's why all hikers ended up being funnelled back the upper trail.

Hello everyone: Michael T. sent me an e-mail with some very important information that I want to share with you. As you know, I thought I made a mistake and missed the lower valley trail and then went back up the upper valley trail by mistake. As I was paying careful attention to my map, I couldn't figure out how I missed the trail and later wondered if my map was wrong or if the trails had changed. Michael has just pointed out to me that Parks Canada has closed the lower valley trail for regeneration. Thus the only way out was by taking the upper valley trail, which is why all hikers ended up on that trail. My map did not show that the only way out was by the upper trail ... if I had known this, I would not have made the loop to the Giant Steps. Sorry about the extra length on the trip, but Michael's explanation has really cleared up matters for me!

Leslie, from what I see it looks like there are 2 Alicia,s.

    August 13, 2013

  • Leslie J.

Hi ... Alicia --- are there two people named Alicia coming to this hike? Or did you make a duplicate RSVP in error? If so, please change one RSVP to "no" so Craig will know he is just picking up one person at Shouldice. Also, this will enable one person presently on the waitlist to join the hike. Thank you!

  • Leslie J.

Thank you, Craig, for your help. I can take my car from the PetroCanada station and leave it at the Paradise Valley trailhead. Hopefully that will save us time on the shuttle.
.... Regarding the two Alicias -- perhaps this is just one person? I'll e-mail both of them and find out.

Hi Craig: thank you for offering to give Alicia a ride. Could you also take Michael T? He could meet you at Shouldice as well. Then please come to the front doors of the Petro Canada service station (near the TransCanada and Cochrane junction). I live in Cochrane, so I'll meet everyone at the PetroCanada station. Thank you.

I would like to carpool at Shouldice. Anybody could meet there? PetroCanada is not a very convenient location to meet for me. The car park on the unpaved sideway. It collects lots of dusts during the day. I prefer carpool at Shouldice. Anybody?

I am in need of a ride with someone. Is everyone or most people meeting at shouldice parking lot and at what time. I can make it to Shouldice by bus somehow but if I can meet the person somewhere from Woodbine let me know,

Hi Leslie. I might have a friend to add to the group. Would that be ok??

Hi Leslie. Since people have to travel in this area in "tight groups of four" at least, would you consider boosting the limit to twelve spots?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
