As with the Chilkoot Trail trip, this is not an "official" HOGS trip, but we will use the Meetup Site to coordinate things.
This is a 785 km canoe trip starting at the outlet of Teslin Lake located at Johnson's Crossing - once famous for their cinnamon buns!! We will spend around 5 days on the Teslin, depending on the quality of fishing, which I am pretty sure is awesome. This is a nice clear river, with no rapids and some very picturesce (sp) camping spots. Lots of wildlife along the way.
The Teslin then flows into the Yukon River at Hootalinqua, site of several old paddle wheelers. Then we will take our time enroute to Dawson City - up to 10 days by river. The only significant rapids is Five Finger, just beyond Carmacks, and this is nothing to be worried about.
As far as the canoeing is concerned, it is definitely a beginner trip, but due to the remoteness of the trip, we will be looking for participants to have some experience on overnight trips. We will meet in Nov/Dec to discuss things and start serious planning.
There are canoe rentals and transport services available in the Yukon, which some may be interested in. Also, transportation in and out of Dawson is a bit limited. We will be car pooling, but we will have to build in some flexability into the schedule, so we are not rushing on the river.
The trip is planned for August, 2014, probably towards the middle of the month. For those interested, we will be hiking the Chilkoot Trail before this canoe trip, so if interested in both, you will need to do some serious holiday planning for this adventure.
A good read on this trip is Drifting Home by Pierre Berton. He describes his family's trip right from Bennett to Dawson, with glimpses of his early years growing up in Dawson City.
