Going-to-the-Sun road?

  • September 13, 2014 · 9:30 AM

I'm planning to do my annual trip to Montana and ride back through Going-to-the Sun Road before it (partially) closes on September 21st.

We will stay over night in Whitefish. On Saturday, we will ride from Calgary - Fernie - Eureka - Whitefish. Sunday will ride through Glacier Park.

I had so much fun. Thanks to everyone who showed up. We'll do it again for sure. Good time at the Northern, Going-to-the-Sun road was majestic , highway 22 was shorter than usual on our way back (thanks to Simon D, Kevin and Mike for the shortcut).

Good afternoon, hope to see everybody who signed up tomorrow morning. I’ll be there by 9:10AM. I’m planning to leave at 9:30AM sharp, tank full of gas. If you miss the Rendez-Vous, see you in Nanton at the Shell Station at the South end of town. For the weekend: DO NOT FORGET: your ride, your helmet, your wallet, your smile and your PASSPORT.

I'm afraid and upset to say that I need to drop out... My bike is in for service and it's not going to be road worthy by tomorrow... Damn... This ride looked awesome too...

Because of road contruction tomorrow, corner of 24th Street and 114th Ave SE will be trouble. So i'll change our meetup to Flying G, coroner of 114th Ave and Barlow, 11511 - 40 St. S.E, Calgary, AB T2H 1L4. Sorry for the inconvenience, out of my control.

Hey guys! some great tips that I've copied from Gord, who just did the ride this past weekend...good info for newbies and folks that haven't been in the area for a while...

With a large group you will have trouble finding room to pull over and stop. Many pull offs only have room for one or two vehicles some have a lot more. Just have to play that one as it happens. Be sure to take your passport!

Park admission is $12.00 US. They will take Canadian funds at a discount

    1 · September 8

    • Simon P.

We'll split in the park, but we'll gather at the visitors office or the last view point of logan pass (500m before the visitors office)

Unfortunately I can't go this wknd :(. My son is in a hockey tourny already. Have fun guys!

I just noticed this is a two day trip. I can't do two days, so I'm out.

    September 8

  • Gord M.

Did this ride yesterday Sunday 07. At the East end there is 9 miles of hard packed gravel, well maintained, which is kept watered to keep the dust down. The rest is paved. Lots of traffic and slow going but patience will get you there. Watch for pedestrian traffic in viewing turnouts. Have a great ride !!!

    September 8

    • Leandra

Awesome, thanks Gord! Fingers crossed for great weather. Really looking forward to it!

Sunday 5pm, I just called to check availability. Stumptown Inn, Whitefish (877) 284-6655. There are still plenty of rooms available. $93.50 tax included, for 2 queen bedroom.

Ok guys, I'm back. We're now 13, and only 5 rooms reserved as far as I know. Anybody else booked their own room like Ingo? Ingo, are you taking a roommate? In my 4 rooms, I'm keeping spots for Simon D & John E.; Trevor & I; Mike G & Chal; Leandra & Nicole (as I'll keep the ladies together).

    • Ingo

Hi Simon, I'm still waiting for a buddy to get back to me whether or not he will join. He said most probably yes. He will let me know some time by the end of next week. If he doesn't join, I'll take a roommate.

      September 5

    • Simon P.

Since I didn't get any answers, I will assume that other than the people I mentioned, you'll take care of your own reservation.

      September 7

  • Chal

Thanks Simon. I'm back as well. Count me in...

    September 4

  • Tanner

I wouldn't worry about riding through the gravel or the dust or falling or scuffing up your shiny bike. I would worry about riding off the side of the mountain and plummeting several thousand metres down the mountain to a violent death! Hahaha! Just kidding!

    August 20

    • Leandra

Awesome! what do you say Tanner, wanna ride be our Knight in Shining Armour? lol

      August 28

Simon P, 12 riders and counting...I think we're going to need a bigger boat... ;)

Did the trip by car over the weekend with the family. Actually there is a 9 Mile section on the Going to the sun road with "Rough Road", however, it didn't look too bad at all. More annoying were the millions of bicycles trying to get up to Logan Pass. As the road is pretty narrow, and also packed with sight seeing vehicles, the drive was very slow. Still a great drive, through a stunning piece of Nature.
I am actually thinking of extending this trip for a day, going back on Monday, Sep 15. The whole Whitefish area is so beautiful for riding. Cheers, Ingo

    August 25

    • Leandra

Way to recon Ingo! thanks for the update. Always nice to extend a trip, wish I could join you in that :)

      August 25

    • Ingo

I guess I just booked my room for another day. Hopefully the weather will be OK.

      August 26

  • Leandra

I'm super-wimpy when it comes to riding on gravel. I've sent a note to the GNP service to see if I can get a full update of the status of the road. Will share with everyone when I hear back

    August 20

    • Leandra

Don't you wish newbies weren't such whiners? lol! thanks for the reassurance guys :)

      August 20

    • Mike G

Well that gets rid of the marbles! I'm in.

For those that are interested, I have posted a few pictures from my ride across Logan's Pass. Have a look at the 10 pictures at www.chaloner.ca/sun.

These were taken the day of the Waterton trip. The first 10 or so kms on the east side heading in from St. Mary are perfectly drivable. The rest is clear pavement with a few wet spots here and there. Heading back from Mexico to Montreal... then on to Calgary...

    August 20

  • Ingo

    Hello All!
I just googled "Going-to-the-Sun-Road", looks beautiful but scary. I got my license this August, so maybe such a trip would be too much? I mean, I don't have too much riding experience, and I don't want to slow anyone down. Looks like an interesting trip though... What do the more experienced riders think?

    Thanks and Cheers, Ingo

    August 12

    • Simon D.

I looked it up this summer. There is still some construction with about a 15 km stretch of gravel.

      August 19

    • Ingo

15km...that's a whole lot of gravel to ride through. I'll better bring my Knight's Armour.

      August 20

  • Simon P.

I booked 4 rooms for the 7 of us at Stumptown Inn, Whitefish, MT. The cost for each room is $93.50 including taxes. There's a 48 hour cancellation policy.

    August 14

    • Ingo

Ok Simon, will do. And enjoy your vacation.

Will bring my machine, so no snoring.)

Heads up, i'm starting my vacation tonight and i'll have very limited to no access to internet in the next 2 weeks. So, don't worry if you don't hear from me until September.

Good morning, i just started looking into accomodations. Pine Lodge is full. I'm looking into Stumptown Inn and Downtowner Inn, waiting for answers.

    August 13

    • Mike G

Thanks for doing this Simon. I will take any room and pay my share. Whatever you think is good.

      August 13

    • Simon P.

After chatting with Downtowner, i decided the bunk room wasn't a good option for our group.

In case anyone is wondering, you can get the rear tire changed out on your Harley in Mexico (you supply the tire) for only 100 pesos... that's more or less $8US.
