Writing On Stone DAY TRIP

The distance from Calgary to Lethbridge is about 223 km with the Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park located about 100 kilometres southeast of Lethbridge. It is one of the largest areas of protected prairie in the Alberta park system, and serves as both a nature preserve and protection for a large number of aboriginal rock carvings and paintings. The park is important and sacred to the Blackfoot and many other aboriginal tribes.

Brett, I plan on being back in Calgary at about 6:30pm or there abouts. I figure it will take us about 3.5 hrs to reach our destination with an ETA of say approx 11:30 am that is if we don't stop for lunch in Lethbridge. If we do stop for an early lunch (which is recommended) we will probably arrive there at about 1pm. Once we get there I plan on hiking for a bit and leaving at about 2pm to 2:30pm - therefore - the time that we will get back will be somewhere between 6pm and 6:30pm. Be sure to bring lots of fluids and a hat. It might also be a good idea to bring some bug spray as it has been a wet season. Yadah Yadah ...

For adventure riders/bikes, the Skyline road is a fantastic way to head South on gravel and get 360 degree views of prairie and mountains.

I was advised that the Vulcan route is shorter if you are coming from the north and avoid the Deerfoot. The roads are narrower and there is not much to see other than the farmland and prairies. In short it is less scenic although the traffic can be better except for the long weekends.

I was thinking of passing thru Vulcan, I've never been and I'm curious. It's also something I can do on the way back.

Deerfoot Trail to Nanton. Nanton to Lethbridge. GPS to destination. If you have a suggestion that does not involve major detours and gravel roads you are welcome to share it. Bear in people get really irrate if a detour does not work out. Time is of the essence it will be a full day.

I won't be able to attend this one as I'll be in the States that weekend but I've been to Writing on Stone many times...definitly a place to check out. When you're there don't just hang around the visitors centre area, there is an awesome hike for those inclined. It starts in the NW corner of the first parking lot at the bottom of the hill towards the campground.....take your camera and some water.....
