Re: [motorcycle-74] nightriders

Hey Heather .... I hope you haven't pulled out of the mailing list yet.. Going faster doesn't make anyone a better rider. The important thing here is that Chris has helped formalize some ground rules for what a Group Ride should be, he's obviously put some real thought into it. I'm new to group rides so this is a different experience, but as long as everyone knows what to expect on the next one there shouldn't be any disapointment, as long as the organizer spells it out ahead of time. I think the majority of those who met Wednesday night are with you ... it's supposed to be a friendly group ride where we stick together.

Heather please don't go - I don't think anyone was intending on singling anyone out and if anything I wrote came accross as such I apologize.

I think we can all remember what it was like to be the "new rider" - and the only way anyone gets any better is with practice.

I have been riding street bikes for about 12 yrs, and I know that when we went on holidays here a few weeks ago we went to areas I had never been (at least not on motorbike), and I very quickly figured out that I don't know everything, and believe me, I wished I could have put training wheels back on my bike for some of the roads we went accross - but I took it at my own pace and my boyfriend was constantly waiting on me - with the attitude that the only way to get any better is to practice and if you push to keep up or ride outside YOUR capabilities you are just asking for problems.

I am more than willing to try to help / share knowledge with anyone who wants it, but the only way to get better is to do it.

Heather, (or any other "newer" riders) if you want I would be willing to go on rides with smaller groups if you want to work on you technical skills and get more comfortable with your machine without riding alone.

I think some of Carl's comments were not really appropraite and came accross way to harsh - and when riding with a group there are certain things that are understood (at least in my opinion) and one of those is if another member of the group has technical problems or stops - at least one person (usually the sweep) will stop and make sure everything is ok and wait with them as long as needed.  I went on a HOG ride a while ago and one of the bikes pulled off just for some water - and the sweep stopped and waited with them, the rest of the group continued on and EVERYONE waited in Bragg Creek until EVERYONE got there - and it was a 20-30min wait.

However, that being said, we do need to ride safe - and if we are going below the speed limit - we need to not be in the left lane, we do need to leave room for cars to pass if needed, and we do need to leave enough room between bikes for everyone to be safe.

so....Heather, please don't go - I think you will be a lot of fun to ride with - and we all started somewhere - and I still am not a huge fan of riding alone!!!
