Hiking with Heidi - Intermediate/Advanced

My current plan is to do Mt. Allan a.k.a. Nakiska Ski Hill Mtn.

Details:
Intermediate Goal: Olympic Summit
Height: 2300m ASL
Gain: 800m in ~5km (one way)
Time:~ 7hours rt

Advanced Goal: Summit of Mt. Allan
Height: 2819m ASL
Gain: 1319m in ~7km (one way)
Time: 9+ hours

We will meet at Shouldice arena at 7:30am as we need to be on the trail by 9am. The usual Ribbon Creek Parking lot is closed so we will have to carpool/ meet in order to make it to the right parking area for this hike.

You will need: lunch, snacks, ~3L of water, weather gear, sturdy boots, hiking pole(s), hat, sunscreen, bug spray and a change of socks.

Disclaimer:
This is a long strenuous hike. While it is on trails that are relatively clearly marked, this is not for beginners or first time hikers. Know your limits and hike within them.
Please read about the trail and ask questions. I claim no responsibility for your participation. If you come it is at your own risk.
I don't mean to be cold/rude but I really want to do this hike this year. So please come prepared. The weather at the base is supposed to be good. However, with the amount of elevation, it will change by the time we get up there.
We will turn around at a safe time to make sure that we are not hiking in the dark.

No dogs please.  This hike in the heat is too strenuous for our furry friends.

I will try to keep track of the details for the hike as I plan to make it an annual event.

See you out there!

I continue to be overwhelmed with pride and admiration for you all to have accomplished such a goal! This was truly one of the best days I have had in the mountains. What a gift of a great group for a great day!

    Hi everyone,

Thank you for bearing with me and making this trek. I have uploaded the GPS map for today. We started at 1425m , climbed to 2819m and had to regain 200m in the middle. So all told a gross gain of nearly 1600m and a net gain of about 1400m. All in approximately 8.75hrs.

A great group of people to hike with and not to mention the BEST ICE CREAM STOP EVER!!

Thank you, thank you thank you!!! I hope to see you all out again next year! Maybe we'll try the North approach!

Finally hiked Mt Allan, one of my "must-do" hikes, so I'm happy. Spectacular views; awed looking down at Nakiska, with the gondolas, the runs and seeing the ski perimeter. Great company of hikers. Thank you, thank you. And a big thank you to Heidi for organizing this hike !

Hi Everyone! I'm sorry I've been in the field this week and mostly out of range of the computer. For those of you who have messaged me about the hike, I appreciate the information. My request for information had less to do with speed of hiking and more to do with ability to cope with mild exposure, length and elevation.
As I stated in the description, the trail is fairly well laid out but we need to be prepared. I will give a briefing at the trail head in the morning. I should say that while I expect a few of you may surpass me in speed, I intend to do as much of this as I can. I am not intending to stop and wait for people to catch up. I will stop when I need to and continue when I am ready. However, usually people do not have difficulty with the pace I take. Weather and wildlife dangers are reasons for the entire group to turn back. Again I will cover this in the morning. See you at Shouldice :-)

Hi Heidi, I assume we are hiking the south approach but from a different trail head?

    • Miriam R

Oh, I am so okay. Mt Allan is on my list so can't wait to put a check on it. Hope I can keep up with the pace but will try

That's great! I was only able to do it for the first time one year ago so I hope to be better this year! It was the 23rd of August and we hiked into the front of a snow storm! By the next morning it was snow capped again :-(

I'm sorry to disappoint some of you who have RSVP'd but I will be quite selective on who can attend. I either need to see your profile history or send me a message with your experience. This is a goal oriented hike which is different from most of my hikes and most of the hikes in this club. It is not usual for me to be so selective but please understand my motives for this time.

    Thank you,
    Heidi

    Hi Miriam,

We will take a steady pace to make it to the summit. If we have time the way down may be more relaxed. This is not a photo stop hike. It is out and back.

    Hope this helps,
    Heidi
