Snow Shoe - Snow Shoe Hare Trail - West Bragg Creek - Beginner.

LET'S RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A NICE DAY OF SNOW SHOEING.  WORK OFF SOME OF THOSE EXTRA POUNDS FROM CHRISTMAS AND MAYBE A HEADACHE FROM RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ ALL OF THIS INFORMATION BEFORE SIGNING UP ESPECIALLY THE SECTIONS ON CLOTHING AND WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND PLEASE REMOVE YOUR NAME FROM THE LIST AT THE LATEST BEFORE 0700 ON THE MORNING OF THE EVENT......IT'S AWFUL WAITING FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT GOING TO SHOW.

DOGS are allowed but must be ON LEASH.

Anyone who has gone on previous beginner snow shoe trips this year should be able to do this one ... there are a few more small hills than some of the Kananaskis trails that will provide ascending and descending practice......Remember we go at a slow pace with lots of stops to take photos, make snow angels, etc. etc.

This will be a half day out, we expect to be back in Calgary before 3 pm.  Time on the trail will be about 3 hours and the drive takes at least 45 mins each way.

PREFER THAT EVERYONE MEET AT THE HERITAGE PARK LOCATION NEAR THE BIG H AT 9:30AM.  We will depart from there and go to Anderson Road, 37 St. and onto hwy 22x which will take us to the hamlet of Bragg Creek.  At Bragg Creek we will turn LEFT at the second stop, drive to the end of the town and the T intersection... turn left and follow the road until you see the parking lot for the West Bragg Creek area.

DISTANCE for HIKE: The Snow Shoe Hare trail is 5.5 kms round trip.

ELEVATION: The elevation gain is approx. 50 - 70 meters. There will be a few more "rabbit" hills  than previous trips such as Lower Kananaskis Trail, Penstock Loop and Troll Falls but all are easy to do.

CARPOOLS

Please indicate when you sign up if you are able to offer a ride. If you need a ride please contact the people who offer rides by clicking on their photo and sending them an e-mail.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:

Lunch

Water  - 2 litres or more if required

Flask with a hot drink/soup

Granola bars or trail mix

Small first aid kit

snow shoe repair kit if you have one (duct tape can come in handy)

A large piece of plastic or something to sit on during lunch

CLOTHING

Large heavy coats will be too hot. It is suggested you dress in layers and do not wear COTTON this includes jeans. Make sure you have room in your pack to store your jacket in case you need to take it off if you get too hot. Note that when we stop for lunch you will cool down, so you may want to have a spare top in your backpack to pop on while we eat.  Extra dry mitts are a great idea too.   (An idea is to leave another change of clothes in the car so to have something dry to drive home in).

Please check out the pages tab for more information on what to bring when going into the mountains in the winter:  http://www.meetup.com/Calgary-Nature-Lovers-Hiking-Meetup/about/

Hallo everyone. Snow Shoe Hare is a good, well prepared and posted trail - although possibly a bit too much to be called a beginner trail.Thank you all for your help and consideration, starting my New Year with a fantastic day. I much appreciated that whenever I had a problem - uphill/downhill/icy - someone would magically appear to give a much needed hand. I don't like to single anyone out, but Pat... you were special. For practically all the way you were with me with a push uphill and stops for a breather when I started to flag!. When I got home I had some muscle cramps - probably fatigue from a long neglected activity - and some dehydration, but today everything is fine. Jean H.

Hi Jean... it was nice to have you along in our group. Congrats on doing 5.5 kms on your first time out in a long time. The trail is indeed a beginner trail.... short hills, short distance. Many of us have been out doing some snow shoeing when we can, since Nov. But Don't give up, you did wonderfully, considering. When Frank & Linda start posting both snow shoeing and hikes, you may consider doing one of theirs as they both go at quite a slow pace since Linda has a back problem and Frank is an avid photographer. In the meantime, walking and climbing stairs will build up your endurance. Hope to see you out on another adventure.
