Prairie View (Barrier Lake Lookout)

The views are incredible from up at the top and an awesome location to enjoy a lunch with the group!  You will not want to miss this one!

What to see?  Check out Barry's website.
http://hikingwithbarry.com/2011/07/12/barrier-lake-lookout-kananaskis-hiking-alberta/

And check out these photos as well for a sneak peek!

Length 6.4 kms. Elevation gain 610 meters. You will be rewarded with beautiful mountain top views.  This lookout is about 100 meters shy of the elevation gain of Sulphur Mountain. With the climbing of the mountain, I will guess that this would be around a 4 to 5 hr hike.

Bring bear spray, water, snacks for the trail and a lunch for afterwards.  Be prepared for sudden changes in the weather.  This is NOT a hike in the city parks.

Wow! Sounds like a great day was had by all. I ran down the mountain thursday night instead of leaving by helicopter (long story) and I'm glad the bears waited for you and didn't take advantage of a single gal on the trail!

Fantastic day out, the rain stayed away which was wonderful. Great people. Icing on the cake was when a grizzly crossed the path about 20 yards in front of Frank and Mike, then we discovered there were two grizzlies - probably about 3 years old according to the ranger! Awesome!

As one of the people responsible for the care and concerns of the fire lookouts in this district, I just want to remind everyone to be considerate and stay out of the way of the lookout staff and away from the working areas. I realize that I probably don't have to mention this to our group. However, on nice days this is an extremely popular hike and it can get crowded at the top. Thank you and happy hiking! Wow and with the thunderstorms rolling in maybe you are getting to see quite the lightening show!

      1 · July 17, 2014

    • Dean H

Heidi: You should have thrown an event together for today!
Frank and Linda: Plus 18 and a "chance" of rain for Sunday. No thunderstorms. Looking like an ideal day for doing this hike!
