Fossil Identification

Let's get together for a fun evening of identifying the fossils that we find in our mountains and badlands.  We'll  have  a hands on experience and look at a wide range of 'stuff'.  Various species of Dino teeth, weird things from the mountains, microfossils under the microscope, put the bones of a raptor foot together, etc.

Next time  out hiking  and you see a fossil specimen, you may just know that it is a blastoid, tabulate coral, brachiopod, bryozoan, etc.  Even when struggling  up the last 50 meters  to Nahaii Ridge you'll  recognize the 320 million year old shark teeth in the rocks...eases the pain.

Feel free to bring any of your own fossil specimens and we can all try and identify them.

No knowledge needed but definitely some enthusiasm.

Wow, Thank You Ray for sharing your collection with all of us. I think anyone who has a passion for what they love to do, and who pursue it, is inspirational. The young lad that attended is proof of your impact on todays youth. Last o find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth.

    Thank You Ray

Hi Diane, I guess there's a waitlist now but if I can get a spot, could we carpool? I'd go half on $ for gas.

With 16 on the current Sunday night Wait List, could you consider running this rock identification event a second night soon??

The map to Rays house puts me downtown compared to address. Do we need to bring any snacks or drinks?

    • Darla

Tom, that's a great idea to bring snacks or drinks...I'll bring something, possibly a shrimp tray unless there's anyone with a seafood allergy.

How difficult is the walk because I have 2 boys and really like fossil. I am wondering if I can bring them. If someone can tell me please.
I never been in that place.

    • Ray L

Hi Belinda. This is at my house and not a hike. We will examine collected specimens. Re your children...if members can get a dozen or so kids and grand kids together, then we could have a special fossil meet up for them.

Will see if I can remember any of the fossils I used to be able to identify as an undergraduate geologist, 50 years ago! I'll bring my hand lens and Moore, Lalicker and Fischer (Ray knows what that is!)

    • Ray L

Ha! My copy is tattered and held together with tape. Hope you can come out...an honour to have you. Except I won't be able to make up stuff. ....'What is this?...Hmmm? Let me see. Looks like a Thingamasaurus tooth.'
