D3-4: Hailstone Butte or Windy Peak Hills (formerly Headwall Lakes)

Please indicate in your COMMENTS if you can drive, if necessary. I need to know if we have adequate transportation for all participants, not your preference to ride.

Please answer the questions thoroughly.  There may be a test.

TRIP WAIVER AND CONDITIONS: You must sign a trip waiver to attend this event. Your organizer will be your witness. The yearly membership fee is $20. Memberships purchased now will last until the Annual General Meeting in 2014. Alternately, you may participate as a non-member for $5 for the day.

Description: Easy to Moderate Snowshoe

Distance: 4 - 11 kms (roundtrip)
Roundtrip Time: 10 - 11 hours est. (Only an estimate. Don’t make plans that depend on it. It’s the mountains.)

Driving Time: 4 hours

On Trail time: 3 - 6 hours (depending on whether we go to Hailstone Butte or the hills)
Elevation gain: approx. 350 m (Calgary Tower is 191m high)

Leaving Calgary, we head south to Longview where we will gather together again for coffee and a washroom stop.  We will drive south of Longview 28 kms to the junction of Hwys. 22 and 532. At the junction we turn west on to Hwy 532 (aka the Johnson Creek Trail Road) and drive for another 21.3 km.  We will park at the so-called "Hump (the high point on the road) just past a cattle gate and fence. This is where the trail begins. From there we can go to either Hailstone Butte or the Windy Peak Hills.

    Avalanche ratings for tomorrow are Moderate/Considerable. I am looking for a different destination.

      No problem. I'm sorry that the avalanche ratings aren't better. The lakes are lovely, but they were closed last summer because of bears and there are some chites to worry about.

    I did Burstall pass hike three weeks ago. Snow was pretty deep past the midway, and we had to turn back. Snow was more than knee deep and it was getting really hard to proceed without snow shoes. Has anyone been to Headwall trail lately?
