Floe Lake Weekend Backpacking Trip

IMPORTANT: Your spot is not confirmed until you have paid me for your campsite.

Floe Lake Campsite

Where: Kootenay National Park

Cost:$22.50 per tent (if 2 people sharing a tent, $11.25pp) - I reserved and paid for 4 campsites. I can share my tent with a female - just contact me.

When: July 20-21, 2013

Who: 7 people max.

Distance: 10.5 km (one-way)

Elevation Gain: 720 m

Difficulty: Moderate

Safety: Bears, weather

Floe Lake is a scenic trip with many spectacular mountain views. There are plenty of side trips available with great photo opportunities. The hike is all up, but you will be rewarded with the grand mountain landscape.

Signing-up instructions

  1. Read the trip description
  2. Contact a member on the attendee list with whom you would like to share tent and equipment. I can share a tent with a female - first gal contacting me will get the spot. If you would like a tent to yourself, you will need to add a "+1 guest".
  3. Email me with the following details: who are you sharing with and will you (or your tent mate) be able to drive. Also, let me know how will you pay me - emailing me the money (can provide you with my email address once you have contacted me) would be most convenient but I am open to your suggestions. If you have not paid your membership for 2013, you will be able to do so at the same time.
  4. Once you signed up as "attending" you will have 10 days to contact me with all the details and payment. If I don't hear from you in 10 days, you will be removed from the trip. Please note that the cost for the camp-site is non refundable. It can be time consuming and difficult to get refunds or find appropriate members to fill spaces.
  5. If you are committed to coming to this trip but you run into roadblocks such as struggling finding a tent mate; don’t know anybody from the group; don’t have the necessary equipment; need help with what to pack; etc. reach out to me as I might be able to help.
  6. If you are on the waiting list, don't be discouraged as people do cancel - just make sure that once you know you can't attend, you have updated your response.
  7. If I have not backpacked with you before, attending the pre-trip meeting will be mandatory so that I can ensure that you are adequately prepared to participate in this event.

PRE-TRIP MEETING: To be announced!

It is your responsibility to make sure you have brought all the required equipment, clothing, and food for this trip. All outdoor activities involve a certain degree of risk, so you need to be prepared, self-reliant, responsible, cautious, and aware of hazards. As well, mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for changes. Check the weather before the trip to determine appropriate clothing.

If you have any questions please email me.

Thank you for everyone coming out. Great weather, stunning views and good company. Congrats for making it up to the lake - especially for those of you who haven't backpacked in some time! I hope you felt proud when coming down the mountain and thinking "I climbed up all of this???" :)

Dang! I am going to have to take my name off the rsvp list for when work calls I have to go,I will be calling floe lake to cancel my site booking.
I am missing CORA and all the adventures although I am trying to make up for in BC when I can.
Have a great trip and hope to see you all soon.

Woo-hoo! Good news: according to Parks Canada trail condition report posted today looks like that Floe Lake is doable. At this point it is not recommended due to snow cover but there is a month for the snow to melt: http://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/tcond/cond_e.asp?oPark=100253

Due to the recent flooding, I will have to re-evaluate this trip closer to the date. The original route I was hoping to take involves crossing couple small bridges that I don't know if still exist (and I don't know if the streams are fordable). There is another route to get to the campsite that is more challenging but again I have no idea of the trail condition at this point in time. Fingers crossed that one way or the other we can get there.

Please note that I strictly apply the rules of payment. Do not wait 'til last second to pay me for your share of the cost as you will be risking being removed from the trip. I have paid for these campsites over two months ago out of my own pocket and I am not a lending institution. Hence, it is simple courtesy that you make arrangements for payment as soon as you can or contact me with a valid reason for the delay in reimbursing me. Thank you.

    June 20, 2013

  • Katalin

Aleksandra and Marie, I have moved the two of you to the list of attendees provided you are OK to share a tent. Please email me your share of the cost of the campsite fee.

    June 18, 2013

  • Josh

    Can share a tent. I have a 2 person

    June 16, 2013

    • Katalin

Josh, there was a cancellation so I have moved you and Jesse Davies to the list of attendees since both of you indicated that you are OK to share. I will be setting up a pre-trip meeting shortly where we can also discuss some logistics and sharing.

  • Aleksandra

I am on a wait list and waiting for the updates...

    June 15, 2013

  • Marie

Hi, I am also on the waiting list, new to this group, and new to backpacking. My understanding is that money should be send once we know that we can attend. Is that correct? I look forward to be notified that there is a spot. If able to come I have my own tent but would appreciate ride I possible.

    June 10, 2013

    • Katalin

Hi Marie, your understanding is correct. Payment is required once a person is moved onto the list of attendees. Then the person has 10 days to complete the requirements including payment. I will be updating the list of attendees on June 20th if necessary.

      June 11, 2013

  • Ugur

    I'm open to sharing tent.

    June 10, 2013

    • Carol

Ugur! Fellow mountaineer :) Hope to see you on this trip, or soon.

      June 10, 2013

  • Jesse D.

Hi Catalin, I am on the wait list. I look forward to attending the pre-trip meeting as I don't know folks on this group and I need to gear up. I also am fairly new to backpacking, having always done canoe trips. I really look forward to doing this!

(If I am on the waiting list should I send the money?)

    +1 (Maybe).
