It was an interesting day outing. The on and off weather was a welcomed challenge; many thanks for those who joined me today. We were pretty close to the summit, but mother nature once again showed us that you can never trifle with her. Of course, what counts most, needless to say, is the challenge and welcoming winter in such great company! See you peeps again soon.

Hi Ugur..there is long wait-list..Are you planning to open up some seats tonight??

    September 27, 2013

  • Ugur

The weather forecast says it will be variably cloudy on Saturday, getting sunnier as the day opens up. Hope it'll be snow and rather rain free, but still bring some shell layers for extra warmth. This area is most beautiful when there's snow on top of Birdwood and Smuts. Can't wait to get out there!

It appears that there's a lot of snow in Kananaskis as of today. I've made some changes in the trip. You must now bring ice axes and microspikes (or crampons) --- they are MANDATORY!!

    September 25, 2013

    • Mike

Is there a chance someone has an extra ice axe ?

Hate to cancel, but sometimes life intrudes on going out and living it.

In this trip, I won't be taking more than 8-10 people with me - this is precisely because Smutwood's summit is very narrow and moderately exposed, so not enough room for a big group. Hence, a couple of other things to consider:

    (1) Those in the RSVP list: If you'd like to drop out, please do so before Friday, so that others in the waitlist could get in. (2) In addition, we saw snow this week in Peter Lougheed; which means that Smutwood's summit may be snowy too. Without doubt, that'd make the scenery more awesome than it normally is, but also the terrain a little bit more sketchy (especially the final ascent, the crux). So I'd highly recommend bringing your ice axes and microspikes.

When I joined CORA, on-line I was instructed to pay the organizer on the day of the hike, which I did. I was not aware of or did not see an on-line payment window?? I am sorry for the inconvenience. I hope I am able to participate in this group? The hike was black rock mtn. the organizer name was Rob on June 8,2013.

    September 17, 2013

    • Ken S.

Bob, that was my hike. I'll change your profile to say member 2013. I thought I had.

      September 17, 2013

  • Ugur

Once again, I must remind you that until you're confirmed CORA 2013 Member, I cannot add you into the RSVP list. Payments are made online, and CORA organizers can no longer accept cash on the trailhead. As soon as you're confirmed as Member 2013, I'll move you back from the waitlist into the trip.

Ugar, it sounds like this trail starts from the same place as the Tryst Lake trail, which was closed on Sept. 12 along with Commonwealth Creek and Smuts Pass due to bear activity:

"1. A Bear Closure has been posted for the following routes: Commonwealth Creek, Smuts Pass, and Tryst Lake.
The closure includes all access points into these areas. Note that the route to Tent Ridge remains open. "

    September 15, 2013

    • Ken S.

Just checked, and the bear closure for those areas has been lifted.

      September 16, 2013

    • Ugur

Yes Ken. I'd heard about the bear closure last Friday when I was checking the availability of the Burstall Pass area as well. Glad to hear that it's been lifted.
