Kids Hike -- Chester Lake, the Elephant Rocks & Golden Larches

  • Sep 22, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Last weekend we did Snow Peak across the highway from Chester Lake. The larches are just starting to turn in the area, and there are far less people than at Larch Valley. The trail condition report for Chester Lake says "Open but flood damage may require route-finding", but Deidre did the trail enroute to the Fortress recently and reports it should be no problem.

Please read the entire hike description before RSVPing.

Members are free. Kids 17-years and under are free. CORA no longer allows drop ins, and organizers no longer accept cash. You must pay your $20 membership fee online before this trip.

CLICK HERE TO PAY YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEE.

The minimum age for this hike is 6. This hike will not be suitable for kids younger than 6. The difficulty of this trip will be most suited to youth aged 8 to 14, although 15 to 18 should have a good time, too.

You must be with a kid to come on this hike. All kids must have an adult with them. My youth hikes are intended to get kids out with other kids in an effort to trick them into having fun in the mountains. Most trails lead to a place where there's somethingfun for the kids, like climbing on rocks or building dams. Note the emphasis on fun. If the kids all stop a couple hundred meters from the parking lot and start building dams across a creek for an hour or so, that's as far as we go. Also, expect the kids to get dirty and wet. Extra footwear to change into for the way home is recommended. There's nothing in the wild as ornery as a kid with wet feet in the back seat of a car.

RSVP: Update your RSVP as early as possible, at least 12 hours before the meeting time. If you are unable to attend for any reason whatsoever, LET ME KNOW as soon as possible. My cell phone is[masked] .

TRIP WAIVER AND CONDITIONS: You must sign a trip waiver to attend this event. You must also sign a waiver for your child(ren). Adult participants must have a paid CORA membership, or pay the non-member fee of $5. There is no charge for children.

Distance: 10 km return

Time on the trail: 4-6 hours

Elevation gain: About 300 m to the lake, a bit more to the Elephant Rocks

Dogs: Dogs are welcome on this trip.

Costs:

Transport: CORA trips start at the trailhead. We meet at the meeting point in Calgary to make organizing trips easier and help ensure we know who's going to show up. On youth hikes we don't car pool. Sometimes kids have to make quick exits, which can make car pooling inconvenient. Please be on time. You may choose to meet us at the trailhead, but please advise us ahead of time.

Driving Directions: Trans-Canada west to Highway 40. Follow the 40 south to Kananaskis Lakes Trail and turn right. In a couple of kilometers, turn right again on the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail. In 22 kilometers turn right into the Chester Lake parking area.

Thanks for coming out! That was a lot of fun. Mack and Michael had a blast climbing on the elephant rocks and it was great to see the kids all start to warm up as Gaston put it.

Turns out CORA does still accept drop ins, but you have to pay online. I can't take the $5 at Shouldice. Please pay for either the annual membership (good until the AGM in February 2014) or the $5 drop in fee for each adult prior to Sunday morning.

Wish I could come, Chester Lake is a fab hike for littles, and also an awesome scramble for biggies :)

I hope to have at least one more kids hike this season. And a wrap up hike to a backcountry campsite to roast marshmallows. Then, it's kid snowshoeing season!
