CORA Winter Organizers Gathering

  • Nov 8, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Since Winter came early this year, I would like to invite all organizers and for those who wish to become a CORA organizer, to come together and discuss about winter trips involving hiking, scrambling, snowshoeing, XC skiing, backcountry skiing, backpacking and so on.

Potential list of topics to discuss:

• Winter trips --- where to go and where to 'not' go.

• Winter gear and safety

• Trip emergency/evacuation planning

• Other things you wish to discuss/address.

I am inviting all CORA organizers to join me at the designated location.

Would this be appropriate to go to for a newbie just so I can learn about some of the things you will be discussing like gear and safety? I have no idea what to buy in terms of gear.

Hi Danielle, this won't be an instructional discussion on gear and safety. More like general concerns and recommendations between organizers. But it's possible that someone will organize an "Intro to winter gear" session in the next month or two for people like yourself so you can have those questions answered. You can also read this document that Ken wrote a while back on dressing for the cold: http://files.meetup.c...

I've spotted several interesting mountain ranges in the K-Country (e.g. Bluerock Range) where one could organize many hiking/scrambling and snowshoe trips throughout the Winter without worrying about avalanche conditions. They may require some map-compass skills and perhaps GPS usage. If you have guide books and maps, please bring them as well. We'll also talk about ski tours.
