D5: Winter Scramble -- Doorjamb Mt + Loder Peak

  • Feb 8, 2014 · 7:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE TRIP DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING UP!

• CORA Organizers no longer accept cash at the trailhead! In order to join this event you need to be a CORA 2014 member; alternatively, you can pay $5 and join as a non-member. Payments are done online (the blue link on the left. Type the amount of payment in the box. Smart phones don't have this application, so you need to do this on a PC/Mac).

• This is NOT a beginner's trip. You must have winter hiking experience to be able to comfortably do this trip.

----

Where: K-Country

Max: 8 people

Distance: 8-10 km (roundtrip)

Elevation Gain: 830 m (Calgary tower is 191m)

Hiking Time: 5 hours (only an estimate).

Difficulty: Strenuous hike on a snowy trail, some hands on slab climbing.

Skill level: A very good level of fitness is required to do this outing.

Hazards: Mountains are clearly dangerous places! Make sure you have the required clothing, gear, toughness, and conditioning

Weather Conditions: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/canada/alberta/kananaskis

Driving/Carpooling: The trip starts at the trailhead, but as a convenience to the members, we will carpool in the designated city location

Please reimburse some gas $$ to your drivers.

Mandatory Gear: Backpack (20+ litres with straps), waterproof hiking boots, microspikes, gaiters, trekking poles windstopping shell layers, food and snacks, 2 litres of water, headlamp, sunglasses, toque/beanie, first aid kit (minimum blister and wound care kits).

Optional Gear: Snowshoes, mountaineering ice axe, camera, map and compass, climbing rope, GPS, sunscreen, sonic balaclava, fire starter.

• Do not wear the following: Jeans, casual shoes (including sneakers/trainers, work boots), cotton layers, small running packs. These are not appropriate footwear for hiking in the mountains. If you happen to wear jeans and non-hiking footwear, you'll be sent to home in shame :)

Cancellation policy: 24 hours prior to the trip. Keep in mind that this is not a dating service; you are either committed or not. Depending on your attitude, Friday late night cancellations may result in having a "no show" -- unless you come up with a very "juicy" excuse such as UFO abductions, alien invasion, flying boars, Metallica concert, or bad hair.

During the trip, you are expected to follow the trip organizer(s) and stick with the group. However, CORA trip organizer(s) are NOT certified mountain guides, but only experienced hikers volunteering and sharing their knowledge. As such, you are responsible for your own safety and equipment.

YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO SIGN A TRIP WAIVER!

It was wonderful bottom-up and top-down. Some dicey spots that posed extra challenge in winter conditions and made me recall 'It's aaa wonderful wonderful life', but overall I think this turned out to be a very engaging scramble with quick descent and lots of hands on. Thanks for making it fun!

PS: classic case of how trail conditions may turn an easy scramble into something more difficult and committed. Kudos to the event hosts for respecting my decision today.

Cold temperatures don't seem cold with no wind a bright sunshine. Great to meet those of you I hadn't met before and to see you that I knew.

We had our AGM meeting the other day. It's time to renew our memberships before Saturday :) (except the guests). Thanks.

Yes, you need to renew it now Shabir. Memberships are valid from one Annual General Meeting (AGM) to another. We held our AGM a few days ago.

I'm not gonna lie, it'll be a wee bit cold morrow, so bring your mitts, extra layers and thermos. But we'll warm up quickly as we go up, and the scramble is a relatively short and quick approach. Nothing we aren't used to ;)

I did East Peak of Wendell in early January. There was absolutely no snow on the ascent slopes. I expect it to be bone dry right now too, but it's a 9 hour outing for a moderately paced group.
