  • Apr 23, 2014 · 5:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

In order to join this event you need to be a PAID CORA 2014 member - PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE ONLINE, with PayPal. If you are not paid in full 24hrs prior to the trip start, you will be removed from the list.

You can pay $5 and join as a non-member when paying online. Payments are done online (the blue link on the left). Type the amount of payment in the box. Smart phones don't have this application, so you need to do this on a PC/Mac).

• These hikes will take place every Wednesday evening. It may be combined with outdoor Yoga sessions depending on the weather.

Where: Elbow Falls Area (K-Country)

Max: 10 people

Distance: 7 km (roundtrip)

Elevation Gain: 700 m (Calgary tower is 191m)

Hiking Time: 2-3 hours (only an estimate).

Difficulty: Strenuous hike

Skill level: A basic level of fitness is required to do this outing.

Hazards: Mountains are clearly dangerous places! Make sure you have the required clothing, gear, toughness, and conditioning

Weather Conditions:

Driving/Carpooling: The trip starts at the trailhead, but as a convenience to the members, we will carpool in the designated city location

Please reimburse some gas $$ to your drivers.

Mandatory Gear: Backpack (20+ litres with straps), waterproof hiking boots, microspikes, gaiters, trekking poles, windstopping shell, layers, food and snacks, 1 litre of water, headlamp, sunglasses, toque/beanie, first aid kit (minimum blister and wound care kits).

Optional Gear: Camera, map and compass, GPS, sunscreen, sonic balaclava, fire starter, helicopter (for ride down).

• Do not wear the following: Jeans, casual shoes (including sneakers/trainers, work boots), cotton layers, small running packs. These are not appropriate footwear for hiking in the mountains. If you happen to wear jeans and non-hiking footwear, you'll be sent to home in shame :)

Cancellation policy: 24 hours prior to the trip. Keep in mind that this is not a dating service; you are either committed or not. Depending on your attitude, late night cancellations may result in having a "no show" -- unless you come up with a very "juicy" excuse such as UFO abductions, alien invasion, flying boars, Metallica concert, or bad hair.

During the trip, you are expected to follow the trip organizer(s) direction. However, CORA trip organizer(s) are NOT certified mountain guides, but only experienced hikers volunteering and sharing their knowledge. As such, you are responsible for your own safety and equipment.

Anyone meeting at the trailhead, expect us around 6:30-6:45.
Feel free to arrange carpooling amongst yourselves - from the south. There are several of you coming from down that way.

Are you guys still planning to go if it rains? The weather gods seriously hate the Weds. Prairie hike!

We'll have to call it Wild Weather Wednesdays" or something. Ugur was suggesting it would toughen us up...

And yes I would still plan to go if it's raining. Thunder and lightninng may keep us off the hill.

    Hi Dave/Ugur,

I keep active and love hiking but a bit nervous to sign up as I would consider myself a beginner. Would you take a beginner for this one?

    April 20, 2014

    • Dave M.

We will take any skill level, just be aware that we're primarily doing the Wednesday hikes as fitness hikes. That means we let the group split and move at multiple paces (as directed by each individuals comfort level). We just ensure everyone gets what they want out of the event and is safe.
