D4 - Sulphur Mountain via Cosmic Ray Road Hike

  • Nov 25, 2012 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Distance: 14 km loop

Elevation: 900m

Time: 5 - 6 hours on trail at a moderate pace

Location: Banff Town site

Sulphur Mountain is a popular Gondola destination in Banff townsite. We will not take the Gondola up or down, unless you want to pay and come down with it, but rather hike up via the Cosmic Ray trail and down the Gondola trail.

There will also be an option to go to the Hot Springs Pool after the hike. We will organize the car pool accordingly. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan on going to the pool.

This will be a loop, so we will need cars at both ends.

2012 Membership dues of $20 must be paid to participate, or you can pay $5 for the day.

By participating in this CORA activity, you automatically agree to follow the CORA Rules of Conduct.

RSVP:
Update your RSVP as early as possible, at least 48 hours before the meeting time. If you are unable to attend for any reason whatsoever, LET ME KNOW as soon as possible. If you do not let me know, you will be recorded as a "no show".

Car Pooling:
Please indicate in your COMMENTS if you can drive. I need to know if we have adequate transportation for all participants, not your preference to ride.

Please ensure you complete the questions thoroughly.

Participation:
The trip organizer reserves the right to move people on and off the trip or wait list, or to increase or reduce the size of the group, in order to match people to the trip based on fairness, ability, safety, and other criteria.

TRIP WAIVER You must sign a trip waiver to attend this event.

The organizer is not a licensed guide. Just an experienced hiker willing to share his knowledge.

DIRECTIONS:

We will meet in the parking lot of MacMahon Stadium, near the pedestrian bridge over Crowchild Trail and carpool from there. We will follow Hwy 1 to the Banff townsite and park one vehicle at the Cave and Basin parking area where the hike will start, and another vehicle at the Gondola terminal where the hike will end.

Weather forecast: Always come prepared for any conditions

Trail conditions: unknown but MicroSpikes are highly recommended.

Costs:
Members are free. Non-members fee is $5. Gas contributions for drivers (see below).

Transport :
CORA trips start at the trailhead. As a convenience to participants only, we meet at the meeting point in Calgary then car pool from there. Please be on time. We don't want to have to wait around long. You may choose to meet us at the trailhead, but please advise us ahead of time. Please indicate in your RSVP COMMENTS if you can drive, if necessary. Please reimburse some $$ to drivers for gas.

While the Copelands decried commercialism at the top of Sulphur Mountain, on this cold day, the hot soup here really hit the spot. Vive le free gondola ride.

Was there enough snow on the road to ski up to the top? I'm thinking about doing it next weekend on light touring skis.

Hi guys, got around 15-20 cm of new snow in Banff in last couple of days, so conditions should be good on Sunday!

Hey,Lukas, I'm just sure about Sulphur Mountain area is a recognised cougar's habitat. You right, last year was some problem there, good reason to us to care about it.

Hi Emilio, are you sure about the cougar warning. I can't find anything on Parks Canada website and the only cougar warning I could find was from late October 2011....

  • Conrad

Thanks for the comments Emilio and Lukas. I will keep an eye on the Banff trail report and we will return the Cosmic Ray way if we have to. Micro Spikes will definitely be mandatory either way.

Hi Conrad, this is Lukas from Banff, long time no see! I was planning to do this loop during the weekend too, so may run into you guys somewhere on the trail :-) Conditions are quite challenging right now, the lower half of the Gondola trail will be very, very icy, with hard-packed snow in the upper half. But forecast calls for some snowing between now and Sunday so hopefully the conditions will improve, with more snow and less ice.
