Cross-Country Ski (Pocaterra)

  • This location is shown only to members

This event is for multi-level, beginner to expert, cross-country skiers. We will be try our skills on some of the beginner trails and test out a couple intermediate trails (the trails are regularly groomed and trackset). We will travel at a slow to moderate pace (4 - 6 km/hr), covering around 10km over 4 - 5 hours, including breaks.

NOTE: I am not an instructor or trainer, just a knowledgeable beginner, with some basic ski courses. The idea is to keep it an easy-going day and focus on practicing and improving our skiing skills.

Distance: Approx 10 km return

Skiing Time: 5/6 hours estimate (off the trail by 4:30 pm)

RULES OF CONDUCT: By participating in this CORA activity, you automatically agree to follow the CORA Rules of Conduct. Please refer to the "About" menu tab on the main CORA page for the link to rules of conduct.

TRIP WAIVER AND CONDITIONS: You must sign a trip waiver to attend this event if you are not a paid member. The membership form can be downloaded under the "About" tab. Please read the document and fill in your personal details, but do not sign it. Your organizer will be your witness. Yearly membership fee is $20. Alternately, you may participate as a non-member for $5 for the day along with a completed waiver form.

As a convenience to participants only, we meet at the meeting point in Calgary then car pool from there. Please be on time. You may choose to meet us at the trailhead, but please advise your coordinator ahead of time. Please indicate in your RSVP COMMENTS if you can drive, if necessary. I need to know if we have adequate transportation for all participants. Please reimburse drivers for gas. Gas contributions for drivers to be equally divided among participants in each vehicle.

EQUIPMENT: Weather can change quickly -- sun, rain, wind, hot, or cool -- BE PREPARED.

MANDATORY:

  • Dress for winter! Warm layers (yes you can get very hot skiing and will need to take some items off - then when you stop you will cool very fast...so absolutely NO COTTON! no jeans! or else you can't come on the trip).
  • Skis, boots, poles (if you don't have your own skis, we can arrange for the car pool to pass by the Calgary Outdoor Centre where you can rent. You can also rent in advance if you prefer).
  • Temperature appropriate wax/corks/scraper if your skis are waxable.
  • Backpack
  • Liquid to drink and lunch
  • Personal first aid kit including blister treatments
  • sunglasses
  • Money to reimburse driver for gas

RECOMMENDED: a camera, a change of clothes for after skiing, patience and sense of humour.

See you on the Trail!.

I'll try to make it for 9, but I just got the invite at 2:30, and I've not slept a wink yet. If someone else can make it, it might be better for them to go.

A pox on my disrupted Internet access! This looks like a good time. I'd have been signed up if I wasn't troubleshooting tech at the wrong time. Anybody looking for another outing this weekend or another time?

Rental strategy sounds great - thanks for laying out the plan.

If you don't have skis, my plan is to carpool out to U of C for people to rent on the way. This way we can return them on the way back in and you guys only need to pay for one days rental instead of two. Poccatera is my preference for our trip. If it is -17 on Saturday, I would rather that we have a heated hut to store extra layers in and to warm up in after. The reports are saying that Poccatera was freshly trackset today but still has a pretty lean snow base. The second option, Mount Shark, has more snow but has not been trackset since last friday and 13 cm of snow has accumulated since. I will check the reports again tomorrow to see if Mount Shark has been groomed and let you know the plan then.

I need to rent the gear. I heard we are stopping by the rental place on the way up as well?

Thanks Becky. Who else is planning to rent skis from the U of C Outdoor Centre? They are open[masked] on Saturday...so I guess we could swing by on our way back to return the gear, yes?

I will check the snow and trail reports tomorrow and make a decision about location. I am considering Pocaterra because we are a big group and there is lots of space and few crowds. It's also really beginner friendly, has a heated hut and I know the trails pretty well. i am also considering the ribbon creek trails which are also lots of fun but not as good for big groups or mount shark which usually has tons of snow and really wide trails with lots of space but I don't know as well.

Question Becky - would it be a problem if I brought AT gear instead of XC stuff? I want to get some practice with stride when skinning, and I figure I shouldn't mess up anyone's tracks if there's a skating lane.

Hi Paul, AT skis can be a bit slow but as long as you think you can keep up with Nordic skiers then please do bring them. There are beginners on this trip so I don't think we will be going super fast.

Canmore Nordic center.. Groomed tracks and long enough to sweat it out...... My 2 cents.. Not free though.

It will depend on the snow conditions later in the week. I will be watching the trail and trip reports on thursday and friday to get the best conditions suitable to a group of our size and abilities.
