D3 (Easy-Moderate) XC Ski Canmore to Banff (via Goat Creek) + Hot Springs

PLAN:

Cross-country skiing (one-way) from Canmore to Banff on the Goat Creek Trail. It is more or less slightly downhill from the Goat Creek Trailhead. We will also stop at the Banff Hot Springs for an optional soak and/or snack before the drive home.

DIRECTIONS:

Goat Creek trail head is 8 km south of Canmore on the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail (across road from Ha Ling Scramble trail head). Other end is at Park at Spray River West Trailhead (behind The Fairmont Banff Springs).

DESCRIPTION:

An easy gradient with lots of river views. It's a downhill run from the Goat Creek trail head. This trip is not meant for a first-time XC skiier, but if you are a novice (i.e. have XC skied at least once before) and are in relatively good shape you'll be fine. It will be a slow-moderate pace.

Distance: ~18km
Elevation: ~270m of descent (lots of fun)
Time on Trail: ~4 hours

DOGS:

Not this time.

WHO IS GOING?:

Due to complexity in arranging shuttles, I will be limiting this trip to 8-12 people.

EVERYONE gets added to the wait list when they RSVP.

When you RSVP, please ensure let me know (via question responses) if you can drive and how many people/skis you can take as this is what I based my selections on.

I will be hand selecting a group based primarily on the transportation availability for people and skis, as well as consideration for good attendance at prior events (this trip cannot tolerate no shows).

I should have a rather solid attendance sorted out by the 20th.

BACKUP PLAN:

This trip is entirely tentative based on weather (snow conditions and temperature, and avalanche control on the road to Goat Creek) as well as transportation requirements.

If we do not have adequate transportation to shuttle vehicles, the trip will not work. I will move the trip to another weekend if conditions are not adequate.

I will also consider changing the location to doing the Spray River Loop in Banff instead if transportation is insufficient.

GUESTS?

I have closed this particular event to guests in order to give priority to CORA members and make my job of coordinating much easier.

REQUIREMENTS/EQUIPMENT:

-Great attitude and sense of humor

-In decent shape physically and reasonably comfortable on XC skis.

-Skis, boots, poles, warm layers, gloves, toque, food/snacks, water, backpack, etc. Personally, I use classic waxless skis for the least hassle. You can rent from MEC, SportRent, UofC or similar for around $12-17.

-Bathing suit (or $ for rental) and $7.30 for Banff Hot Springs (optional).

-NO COTTON!!!!!!!!! (i.e. jeans etc.)

APRES SKIS PLANS:

The Hot Springs are entirely optional, however, due to transportation requirements, please be aware that if you opt out of the Hot Springs, you will still have to wait for the rest of the members who need a ride back in your vehicle.

There is a cafe at the Hot Springs if you'd prefer to bring a book/newspaper and have a coffee while waiting for the group.

I'd plan for about an 60-90mins spent at the Hot Springs before heading back.

I'm sure no one saw me fall down. Or was it that no one saw me standing!! LOL

Special props to R for forgiving me for PERHAPS forgetting him in Banff, to S for driving my sore butt back to the trailhead, and to the rest of the group for being patient, sharing laughs, pretending not to see people fall, and perhaps eating what may have been a cat meat burger at a nameless location. Hope to see you ALL out again soon! : )

Just a reminder everyone needs to pack an extra bag with swim suit possible change of clothes and extra footwear to leave in the cars in Banff.

Also a reminder that the Hot Springs are TOTALLY optional (don't forget your swimsuit....but no skimpy banana hammocks please! HA HA!) ....but if you are not participating you may want to bring a book and/or some money for a coffee while waiting the 30-60mins for the soakers.

Looks like we will have great weather tomorrow! (Around -4C° ish). An e-mail will be going out to you this evening explaining the shuttle arrangements now that the participants have been finalized (I HOPE!). Don't worry, there won't be a test! Ha ha!

Also, just a friendly reminder, all 2012 members are still valid until the February AGM. However, if you are not a 2012 member (Kirei, Tera, Ryszard, Brian with a picture) you can either pay $5 to participate for the day, OR.......pay $20 for a 2013 CORA Membership that is valid until February 2014. You can print off the 2013 membership form here: http://files.meetup.com/1575023/CORA-new-member-form.pdf

For those still on the waiting list, Roland is doing a XC ski trip the same day. Check out the details here: http://www.meetup.com/Calgary-Outdoor-Recreation-Association-CORA/events/100672792/

What time are we expecting to be back in Calgary?

    January 21, 2013

    • Meghan

I'm guesstimating about 5, but I wouldn't make life-or-death plans that depended on that.

Surprised to see i hv been moved to waitlist from confirmed RSVP. I was even driving.. anyway thanks wil plan something else.. :-)

    January 20, 2013

    • Meghan

I have other drivers still waiting to go on the trip also, Dhinesh, but I can unfortunately only take 12 people. I had accidentally clicked your name instead of the person who was waiting ahead of you, but immediately put you back on the wait list when I realized the error. There will be other trips with no shuttles in the future that I can take more people along with, so hopefully will catch you next time.

Attendance list has been updated. I will be sending out an e-mail confirming the transportation arrangements around Monday evening. As it is excruciatingly difficult to arrange shuttle transportation (and it is currently perfectly organized), I kindly ask that you change your RSVP in the next 36 hours to "Not Attending" if you have changed your mind so that I can re-plan the trip. (i.e. if I lose even one driver, it wreaks havoc on the entire trip for the entire group).

If the RSVP list remains the same, the trip will be a go! : )

Just so everyone understands the very complicated logistics of this trip up front (which I have organized successfully before). 1) EVERYONE drives to the Goat Creek Trailhead (8-9 vehicles).
    2) ALL skis and most of the group will be dropped off there with one vehicle while they wait.
3)The rest of the drivers (7-8?) will then drive to the other Trailhead in Banff and drop off their vehicles.
    4) The drivers will then hop in 2 of the 7 vehicles and drive back to the Trailhead at Goat Creek. The (hopeful) end result?
We all start the trail in Goat Creek at the same time. End up in Banff, with enough vehicles to get us to Hot Springs and back to Goat Creek at the end of the day. Vehicle shuttle are a bit of fiddling, but it pays off with a beautiful downhill-ish 18km run into Banff one way.

Meghan I am up for the shuttling as I think that this sounds like a fantastic day... I hope you dont change the plans..

      January 18, 2013

  • Meghan

FYI: If transportation arrangements for this trip do not work out, I will change the location to Spray River in Banff (which does not require shuttle) and still do Hot Springs afterwards.
