Cross-country skiing (one-way) from Canmore to Banff on the Goat Creek Trail. It is more or less slightly downhill from the Goat Creek Trailhead. We will also stop at the Banff Hot Springs for an optional soak and/or snack before the drive home.
Goat Creek trail head is 8 km south of Canmore on the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail (across road from Ha Ling Scramble trail head). Other end is at Park at Spray River West Trailhead (behind The Fairmont Banff Springs).
An easy gradient with lots of river views. It's a downhill run from the Goat Creek trail head. This trip is not meant for a first-time XC skiier, but if you are a novice (i.e. have XC skied at least once before) and are in relatively good shape you'll be fine. It will be a slow-moderate pace.
Elevation: ~270m of descent (lots of fun)
Time on Trail: ~4 hours
Not this time.
WHO IS GOING?:
Due to complexity in arranging shuttles, I will be limiting this trip to 8-12 people.
EVERYONE gets added to the wait list when they RSVP.
When you RSVP, please ensure let me know (via question responses) if you can drive and how many people/skis you can take as this is what I based my selections on.
I will be hand selecting a group based primarily on the transportation availability for people and skis, as well as consideration for good attendance at prior events (this trip cannot tolerate no shows).
I should have a rather solid attendance sorted out by the 20th.
This trip is entirely tentative based on weather (snow conditions and temperature, and avalanche control on the road to Goat Creek) as well as transportation requirements.
If we do not have adequate transportation to shuttle vehicles, the trip will not work. I will move the trip to another weekend if conditions are not adequate.
I will also consider changing the location to doing the Spray River Loop in Banff instead if transportation is insufficient.
I have closed this particular event to guests in order to give priority to CORA members and make my job of coordinating much easier.
-Great attitude and sense of humor
-In decent shape physically and reasonably comfortable on XC skis.
-Skis, boots, poles, warm layers, gloves, toque, food/snacks, water, backpack, etc. Personally, I use classic waxless skis for the least hassle. You can rent from MEC, SportRent, UofC or similar for around $12-17.
-Bathing suit (or $ for rental) and $7.30 for Banff Hot Springs (optional).
-NO COTTON!!!!!!!!! (i.e. jeans etc.)
APRES SKIS PLANS:
The Hot Springs are entirely optional, however, due to transportation requirements, please be aware that if you opt out of the Hot Springs, you will still have to wait for the rest of the members who need a ride back in your vehicle.
There is a cafe at the Hot Springs if you'd prefer to bring a book/newspaper and have a coffee while waiting for the group.
I'd plan for about an 60-90mins spent at the Hot Springs before heading back.
