The Bonnington Traverse

  • March 19, 2013 · 5:30 PM

This is a 3 to 4 day hut to hut traverse near Nelson B.C. Each cabin is a COZY 6 person hut with a wood stove coleman cookstove and lantern.

The mountains of the Bonnington range are mainly treed and more subdued than our rockies. That said the trip is rated as complex. It is 45km long with a total elevation gain of 2500m and a loss of 2800m. There is some exposed ridge traveling and boot packing on the last day.

The cost of this trip will depend on numbers $60 to $90 for 4 to 6 people. The huts will be $40 to $60 for the 4 nights and the Motel at Salmo is $20 to $30. Carpool costs and food extra.

If you are interested in this trip please go on the wait list and you will be contacted. Experience, fitness and a liking for dogs will all be assets.

Essential gear for this trip is touring skis either telemark or AT, avi gear and a minimum of CSMC,s AS I. You do not have to have this at sign up but must be willing to go on a trip and aquire it,

despite binding removing itself from ski on 4, most amazing ski trip ever. The sled ride out helped ease the pain of the missed turns. Off to drop skis off at ski shop to do it up properly.

Yea Paul I did it last year in an almost whiteout conditions. Adrenalin saturation!!! Also our vehicle was broken into at Bombi summit. GPS a must! Come on guys it was still fun right?????

Thx Paul. Wendy has done this before and is aware of the issues, We have also given ourselves an extra day for either play or "just in case" situations. I've heard great things about the trip and I'm looking forward to it.

I echo Paul - grand time! Finding the cabins in a whiteout without a GPS would be interesting.

Consider not leaving your cars at trailhead if possible (in particular Bombi Summit) or be sure to leave nothing in it visible. Apparently my car was one of many targeted recently.

    Enjoy!

Good luck with this guys. Just completed it in late Jan, it was a great time. Just be prepped to bail out via a different route on the last day if conditions are anything but great - the couple of bootpack ridges were really sketchy!
