Perseid Meteor Shower

I am finally in a position to update you on Saturdays outing to watch the Perseids.

I apologize for not sending anything out earlier, however the area I was planning to go to was heavily affected by the flooding and the access was closed. I was waiting to see if it would open in time (it won't). I was also looking for another venue that would be easy to access and able to accommodate everyone, within a reasonable driving distance from Calgary. I couldn't. :(

Therefore, as with all things mountain the plan now looks like this:

We will meet at 6 PM at Sommerset/Bridlewood Train Station (East side parking lot), drive to Highwood Junction which is West of Longview.  This is a nice open area and the light pollution from Calgary should be minimal. There is a hill there we can hike up or hang out at the side of the road and watch the meteor shower until you have had enough and then head home.

Bring warm clothes and snacks (just like going to the drive in movie theater  - for those who remember those).

If you have any questions or comments please ask.

Perseid Watch 2013: Here's looking at you while some-"thing" else is looking at me! My subconscious pulled me clear out of a great sleep at 2:00 AM Monday, so I checked the skies and went "oh yeah!". Grabbed the head lamp, jacket, then drove half-way between Canmore and Banff townsite, pulled off to the side of #1, shut the lights down, climbed onto my front hood and laid there staring at the heavens 'till 3:00 AM! Saw everything from satellites - to little streamers - to a couple of bold fireballs that left lingering trails; most stuff trailing out from the north. After an hour, I fired up the headlamp and looked around to find a set of big glowing eyes staring at me from behind the Parks Canada fence. Couldn't identify it, but it turned away slowly and disappeared. This is why I do not solo in the mountains. I am an animal magnet. Thanks for a great show, Perseid Meteor Shower. And thanks for the fence, Parks Canada! Back to bed. Anybody else watch the skies on Sunday night?

What a great story Laurel, told so well. I heading as far out as Bragg Creek at about midnight, stretched out on my lawn chair in the back of my truck. I was amazed I was not bothered by any bugs. The sky was clear but the meteors were not in sight. I heard the best time to see them is just before dawn. Im going for it at 3AM! Not looking for any close encounters either! lol

3 stars for the satellites and 5 for the company!

A unique and special evening with nice attendees. Location west of Longview was good. Fascinating to study the sky on a clear night. Saw more satellites than meteors. Now I know how lean beef is made (canines).

I may see you at highwood but not guaranteed. See you another time soon Tom. Perhaps on an upcoming easy or mod scramble.

Go on without us, our afternoon activity finished late and we can't make the meeting time. We'll head to Rosebud or Castle Mountain to photograph the Perseids depending on cloud cover. Ahhh...Alberta storm chasing - the storms chase us around.

Wondermap is still showing cells in the area, it's a gamble for sure, I totally agree with Tom on that one - I found that out last night, but with what I'm seeing rotating through satellite, I'm pulling.

Holly, Girard, Im sorry to hear you aren't well and I hope you get better soon. you should be able to catch some of the action from your yard over the next few evenings

  • Laurel A.

Daniel, I can answer this for Tom. Yes, the Somerset-Bridlewood C-train station is where he has designated the car pool, and the time is 6:00 PM.

Tom, since we will not be going up a ridge and whatnot, it's okay for me to bring along my 9 year old eh?

    August 9, 2013

  • Don

Will meet at the Highwood Junction and not the car pool.

    August 10, 2013

I'm very sorry but I can't attend. I am sick and woke up with a sore throat. I should get a good nights sleep instead. I will be thinking of you guys tonight tho. Have fun!

I suspect it's the usual afternoon/early evening build up. The forecast models are showing it clearing up starting about 8 or 9. Having said that we all know how variable the weather can be. The only way to know for sure is to go look.

    August 10, 2013

  • Laurel A.

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/hourly-weather-forecast/canada/alberta/longview. According to this, things will supposedly improve after midnight, but that's not at all what Wondermap is showing in satellite imaging for the next several projected hours.

    August 10, 2013

  • Laurel A.

I am watching the real-time weather on Wondermap (my room mate's Apple app), and cloud mass is staying consistent for the area we are going to, the biggest cells are accumulating around Longview. We currently are overcast with thunder in Canmore, Calgary is clear. The Rockies are seeing consistent unpredictable cloud cover. This is particularly frustrating because our cloud patterns are rotating and changing so much, I am reticent to drive this distance when I am seeing heavy overcast issues going on in the Highwood area. Last night I ascended Ha Ling here in Canmore and fully expected to do it in the rain ... it partially cleared and gave me one of the best sunset photo ops I've experienced in a long time. Go figure, what the hell. I will continue to monitor, and may not attend if Wondermap continues to report overcast for Highwood.

    August 10, 2013

  • Tom

Jeff, Highwood Juncion is the intersection of Hwy 532 (West from Longview) and 940.

    Daniel, what Laurel said. :)

    August 10, 2013

  • Laurel A.

Coming from Canmore, obviously I will meet everyone at Highwood Junction, not the carpool.

    August 10, 2013

    • Tom

sounds good Laurel. Just remember you can't use hwy 40 as Highwood Pass is still closed

thanks on this, Tom. I knew that, but had forgotten about it again this week.

I do not know the area overly well - is this the junction of the Highwood river and Hwy 22?

    Thanks. :)

    Hey Everyone,

Assuming the skies will clear up for saturday...Does anyone want to carpool down to the train station? I'm in Bridgeland and can fit three people in my car.

    Cheers

hey Matt, that's a great idea! I'm in Connaught which is sort of on way down, or I can meet somewhere downtown along your path, if I could ride with you? Helen

Jeff, thanks for the suggestion. Prairie might still have too much city light pollution - it's pretty close to Calgary, although a good choice to get some vertical in there. Tom, what do you think? Still too close? Possibly so. I saw some wicked meteor streaks from Perseides driving back up from Radium at 1:00 AM two days ago, almost drove myself off the road in fascination!

I am planning a scramble up Mt. Temple (via Sentinel Pass) on Aug 1, 2013. I'm in a group of only 2 or 3. I am concerned about bear restrictions stopping our plans. With a group of 4 or more, we can enter the restricted area. Would anyone be interested in joining us?

If you haven't decided on a spot yet this one is perfect for accommodating a large group of people with tents, plus a perfectly nice (decommissioned) service road leads all the way to the summit. Its also far enough in the back end of the mountains that there won't be much ambient town or city light to take away from the views. http://peakery.com/burnt-timber-lookout/
