Weekend in Jasper UPDATE

  • Jul 19, 2013 · 5:00 PM

I haven't been to Jasper in a LOOOOONNNGG time, which of course means it's time to correct that oversight!  :)

My plan is to drive to Jasper Friday night after work (about 5 hours with stops), camp at one of the local campgrounds. Do a longer scramble on Saturday, a shorter one on Sunday (perhaps in the Miette area), go for a dip in the Hot Springs and drive home.

There are a number of options for scrambles/climbing (Easy to Difficult), including Edith Cavell. What we do will be determined by who comes along. Depending on the makeup of the group we may split the group and do different objectives.

This is an update for the trip to Jasper this coming weekend.

1. I have booked three adjacent campsites at the Whistlers Campground just outside of Jasper.

They are sites 16A, 16B and 16C

We can have a maximum of 2 tents per site and a maximum of 6 people per site

The total fee for the 3 sites is $197.40, which will be divided equally between those who go

As there is currently 13 people signed up we have room for another 5 people

2. My plan is still to head to Jasper after work Friday, likely getting there about 11 PM

Communal Gear:

Tents: I have a 3 person and a 2 person tent available

Under the restrictions that Parks has placed on camping it means everyone will have to share a tent. That means no Single Person tents.

Who else has tent/s they are willing/able to use? How many can it accommodate?

Stoves: I have two, two burner stoves (I white gas, 1 propane) plus a single burner stove. Who has a stove they are wiling to bring along?

Firewood is available to buy and I will bring an axe

Food:

Everyone can look after his or her own. You will need on supper, 2 breakfasts and lunch/snack food. Beverages for the campfire Saturday night  :)

Carpooling: I would prefer not leaving vehicles at Shouldice so if everyone can let me know where they will be coming from on Friday we can likely arrange for people to get picked up. It would also be helpful if I have your phone numbers.

Scrambling gear:

Good boots

30 to 35 litre back pack

Water bottle/bladder (min 1 litre)

First Aid Kit

Emergency bivy sack/Space Blanket

Wind/Rain Jacket

Toque

Mitts/Gloves

Sweater

Headlamp

Multi tool

Sunscreen

Insect Repellent

Duct Tape

Poles

Lighter/Matches

Helmet

Down Jacket (optional)

Rain/Wind Pants

Ice Axe

Crampons/Icers/microspikes

'

Objectives:

There are numerous scrambling opportunities in the Jasper area, ranging from short and easy to long and difficult. We will decide as a group which ones to play on.

If you have any questions or comments please contact me.

    Hi Tom,

I think I'm going to pull out on this one. I'll still be heading up Friday afternoon and doing Indian Ridge on Saturday so if (2) people need a ride they are welcome to ride along. I'll leave Calgary at 3:30 Friday. Have a great time.

    July 16, 2013

    • Tyler M.

Sorry to hear you are going separate ways. I'll look for a ride within the group that's staying both nights. Thanks.

Hi! Would LOVE to come-- I have a 4 and 3 person tent. A car & willing to drive (up to 3 more people) Tom- I have a few Q's before I commit-- email?

I've done a lot of scrambling around Jasper over the past month and reckon that you'll be tad early for Edith-Cavell. Most people wait until mid-August onwards, so I'd recommend having both an ice axe and crampons handy for an attempt from the west.

Everything east of the town site (Bonhomme, Hawk, etc...) will be snow free and in perfect shape. Pyramid and Indian Ridge will have lingering snow patches near their summits but there should be tracks leading through that by now.

    July 15, 2013

  • Chad

    Tom, I have 2 tents. A 3-man and a 2-3 man (2 comfortably). I also have a couple of stoves that I'll bring along.

I would like to go, but I need ride and tent. Any choice??

    1 · July 15, 2013

  • Tyler M.

Hey John, I am not really sure what to bring in terms of equipment either. I would like to summit Edith, but I'd like to know if there's that large patch of snow on back. I would need to rent crampons and an ice axe...there're on my wish list for this winter. Could I take one of the spots in your car? I'd be happy to pitch in for gas and wear and tear.

Hey Tom, looking forward to this awesome opportunity. Want to check in to see how the logistics are going. I'm thinking...do I book my own campsite? should we work out meals and tent occupancy etc? How are we doung with drivers? I know it's a ways a way but if I should look into campsites I need to get on it. Tyler

A few nice long ones could include Hawk Mountain, Roche Miette, Roche Bonhomme (did last year but wouldn't mind re-doing as I reached the summit ridge but didn't complete the true summit due to steep snow crossing and no icers), Pyramid Mountain (very long day) and Indian Ridge. Have done Cinquefoil but wouldn't be in a rush to repeat. Sulphur Ridge at the Miette Springs makes for a nice Sunday hike and provides great summit views of surrounding objectives.
