Ice Climbing 101 including gear rental and basic instruction

  • Jan 12, 2014 · 5:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Note: If you are waitlisted it means you have not paid the deposit and/or you have not paid membership. You are guaranteed a spot if you do both.

Due to a prior commitment I am rescheduling the event to January 12th 2014. I was unable to book a date between Christmas and New Year so I apoligize if this has made it impossible for you to attend. All who have signed up are now on a waitlist and you will not be moved onto the event until you have a fully paid 2013/2014 membership(most fall into this catergory) and pay a non refundable $15 deposit. I require $150 deposit to book the event so I need at least 10 participants. We can bring more buts that's the minimum.  The remaining $50 plus GST is required on the day. Note the very early start time from Calgary as our day at the wall begins at 09:00 am and ends at 4:00pm. Its also a 6 hour + travel day. In the event of poor weather/travelling conditions I will have to negotiate with Frontier Lodge but I am not guaranteeing a refund.

The largest person made(PC) ice wall in Alberta is at Frontier Lodge Nordegg. It is 15m high and has 6 faces, all top roped. It also has a nice wood stove to hang around while you are waiting your turn. I'd like to do a day  session on the wall with anyone, beginner to lead climber as a intoduction to this spectacular sport. More experienced members can work on their technique and skills on ice that is probably rated WI4. Everyone will also have an opportunity to do some ropework, climbing knots, rope coiling. We will also help beginners with belay basics.

Location:

Frontier Lodge near Nordegg.

Clothing is very important both to stay warm and dry. I suggest no cotton pants,  two pairs of snug fitting gloves and some heavier mitts too. Thermal underwear, fleece jacket and warmup parka/down jacket for when you are waiting or belaying.

Prerequisites:
Fully paid club membership 2013/2014

Pay non-refundable deposit $15 Balance $50 plus GST due on day.

Adventurous and courageous

Reasonably fit(Expect a workout.)

Cost

$65 full day(9:00am until 4:00pm) also includes gear rental  and basic instruction from Frontier Lodge climbing and outdoor staff.

You are welcome to bring and use your own gear however there will be no reduction available. The cost is a packaged program which includes instruction and use of the facilities.

travel costs extra approx 500km return.

Ladies I have organized a 101 session Feb 1 on the Banff ice wall. I had a cancellation so there is room for 1 more. Carpool Friday, overnight in Canmore, ice wall in Banff Saturday morning. $90 all in, includes breakfast and shared hotel accommodation (5 women). [masked]

One final comment about deposits. As I mentioned in the promo details deposits are non refundable. We were actually charged for 15 even though 14 attended. I know one person did let me know that they could not attend but unfortunately I cannot refund them. Thank you all for paying promptly.

The crux of the day was the whiteout conditions on the drive to Red Deer. The accolades go to the drivers Mike, Tom and Gerry for getting us all sefely there and back. Definitely worth the drive. Great friendly staff and a very social gang really made it a special day.
