Rock Climbing / Wasootch Slabs

I think it is safe to say that spring is here. Weather is looking decent for Friday, so I would like to get my first outdoor session in this year! Participants must have climbing experience. This means being able to lead belay properly, communicate, conduct safety checks, etc.

***It is extremely important to read the following information carefully and prepare accordingly.***

It is the responsibility of the participant to check for any updates, changes or cancellations before the trip. Gear checks will be conducted at the meet up location. Failure to have the required gear will result in the participant not attending the trip.

An automatic waiting list has been created for this trip. Participants will be selected based on experience for the selected objective. Participants must be punctual and have a good RSVP history. Which means they do not constantly change their RSVP statuses, are not regularly late and do not back out last minute. No shows will be black listed.

Membership:

In order to participate in a CSMC trip, you must have paid for a 2014 membership. Cost for membership with the CSMC is $20. Payment can be made online through the CSMC page on Meetup. Waivers are mandatory for every trip and can be filled out at the meeting location.

Car pooling:

Anyone who has a vehicle may be asked to drive for the trip. Please make sure to bring gas money for car pooling. It is recommended that drivers charge a 20 cent per kilometer / $20 every 100 kilometers rate for driving. This can be divided by the number of occupants in the vehicle. For example if the trip is 300 km’s round trip and there are four people in the vehicle. The cost for gas would be $15 per person.

Group size: 10

Mandatory gear:

Climbing shoes, chalk, belay device, locking biner, harness, slings and anchor equipment, quick draws, rope.

Possible Hazards:

Ticks, rock fall, exposure (Not the naked kind), yogi bear, snow or ice, my sense of humour, high winds.

Please let me know if you have any questions or do not have the required gear.  Not everyone needs a rope to bring along ;)

    Just a reminder via TOM,

The Nut size is 9/16" or a Black Diamond ATC Guide belay device also works.

The CSMC is implementing a competency skill set for rock climbing. It will be classified as RC, levels 1-3. Like the A1-2 and CR 1-2. This will be required for trips into terrain where the skill is needed. There is more information to come regarding this competency. For tomorrow. I will check everyone and make sure that everyone can properly belay, communicate, handle rope, etc. it is the first time we are doing this and I will do my best to run everyone through it in a timely and efficient manner.

Hey there, I'm just trying to decide if I should join this trip! Over the past 4 years I've done a few of outdoor sport and top-rope trips, but mostly I've bouldered. I'm new to Calgary, and am keen to improve my sport climbing. I have shoes/chalk/harness/plate/locking biner/helmet but no other gear at the moment. Anyone else here at a similar level? Thanks!

Brandon, I paid my membership today. I'm living by 22X in South West and I'm planning to meet everybody at Wasootch. I am open to carpool at Somerset / Bridlewood station if you live in South.

Looking forward to the first climb of 2014!

I will bring along a big heavy blue tarp for the ground. There's a bit of snow along the base of the climbs still that's melting and making it quite wet/muddy.

    April 7, 2014

    • Brandon B

Yea, I should pick up a blue tarp too. Good idea.
