Smith-Dorrien Scrambling Trip. Refer to rating.

Please fill out this waiver: https://secure.echosign.com/public/hostedForm?formid=8WUKWK7D6Z2G6M

***It is extremely important to read the following information carefully and prepare accordingly. You must answer the mandatory pop up questions for the trip. If you do not receive them, please let me know. ***

It is the responsibility of the participant to check for any updates, changes or cancellations before the trip. Gear checks will be conducted at the meet up location. Failure to have the required gear will result in the participant not attending the trip.

An automatic waiting list has been created for this trip. Participants will be selected based on experience for the selected objective. Participants must be punctual and have a good RSVP history. Which means they do not constantly change their RSVP statuses, are not regularly late and do not back out last minute. No shows will be black listed.

Membership:

In order to participate in a CSMC trip, you must have paid for a 2014 membership. Cost for membership is $20. Payment can be made online through the CSMC page on Meetup. Waivers are mandatory for every trip and can be filled out at the meeting location.

Car pooling:

Anyone who has a vehicle may be asked to drive for the trip. Please make sure to bring gas money for car pooling. It is recommended that drivers charge a 20 cent per kilometer / $20 every 100 kilometers rate for driving. This can be divided by the number of occupants in the vehicle. For example if the trip is 300 km’s round trip and there are four people in the vehicle. The cost for gas would be $15 per person.

We will be car camping at Spray Lakes campground. I have Monday off and will be staying until then. If you want to stay Monday, you are more than welcome to. Please refer to links at bottom of page to understand what is to be expected for difficulty, time, distance, elevation gain, etc.

The plan:

Saturday: Mount Shark. Moderate class 3 scramble. Route is in Alan Kane's scrambling guide.

Sunday: Mount Buller. Moderate class 3 scramble. This route is also in Kane's guide.

Monday (Optional. I will be staying until Monday): Objective to be decided or used a spare weather day if conditions are not favourable on Saturday or Sunday. However, I am thinking of attempting Mount Kent. The route for this peak is in Andrew Nugara's scrambling guide.

Group size: 8

Mandatory gear:

Mountaineering axe and knowledge of its use, hiking boots (Not shoes), Spare pair of shoes for after the trip, helmet, crampons, warm clothes and gloves, insulated jacket (Preferably a medium weight down jacket), shell jacket, shell pants and gloves, sunglasses, personal first aid kid and emergency blanket or bivy bag, food and water, headlamp, bear spray, hiking poles, NO COTTON CLOTHES OR GEAR. A pack big enough to carry all the gear listed above. 30-40 litre pack should suffice.

Camping gear:

Tent, sleeping bag and pad, stove, pot, dishes, utensils, food, beer or other, water, etc.

Possible Hazards:

Ticks, rock fall, exposure (Not the naked kind), yogi bear, snow or ice, my sense of humour, high winds.

Expect this trip to be a moderate pace. Should there be good weather, expect quick stops for pictures and an extended break on the summit.

Does anyone have questions regarding this trip?

    June 4

    • Brandon B

That sounds like the one. There aren't many campsites up along that road. Which is kind of disappointing.

    • Morgan

I'll bring one-person stove and tent.

      June 4

  • Andrea

Brandon, I might not be able to make it out on Friday nite for camping but would still like to join on both Sat and Sunday. If that is alright, I could meet you at the trailhead on Sat am.

    June 4

    • Brandon B

That's fine. Remond me to give you a meet time once we get closer to the day. It would probably be around 7am.

  • Morgan

Drivers returning Sunday night with room in their cars please contact Morgan - she needs a ride :)

    May 23

    • Brandon B

I don't think getting back Sunday night will be a problem. I am the only person who doesn't have a life.

    • Morgan

      I hope you're right! LOL.

  • Zofia

I am interested in Mt. Shark. Brandon - would you accept people for one day only? I guess depending on your group size.

    May 23

    • Brandon B

How would you get out for the day though?

      May 23

    • Zofia

Let's see what June would bring. Maybe somebody else would prefer to stay just for a day. I may be able to stay entire weekend. I am placing myself on the list tentatively.
