Moonlight Scramble - Wind Tower

Let's go play on Wind Tower.

Wind Tower is South of Canmore on the Spray Lakes Road and follows a well beaten trail to West Wind Pass. From there we turn our back on Rimwall and work our way up Wind Tower.

This is straight forward with no technical difficulty.

Elevation gain: About 1000 meters

Car to car time about 6 hour or so.

Gear:

Icers/Crampons (I expect the trail to be hard pack/ice)

An ice axe may come in handy

Headlamp

Emergency bivy gear, which is another way of saying you need to be prepared to spend an unplanned night outside above treeline.

Usual Winter clothing (NOTE: There is a reason it is called WIND Tower, be prepared)

If you are not already a paid member for 2013 you will need to take care of that, preferably online before Saturday.

I should have known better last Sunday on Holy Cross. The day would have been much more pleasant.

hmmmm, snowshoes might be a good idea, although I'm expecting the trail to be well traveled and packed. At least to the pass. Having said that. I have been wrong before.

I am going to bring my snowshoes. I did that one last year in January and I was glad we had them, because we would have been up to our thighs in it. Plus it is March and the snowiest month in the Rockies. I don't expect there to be any less than last time I did it. That valley up to Wind Pass is a snow trap :/

Are we okay for drivers, Tom or Garry? My brakes have realky stepped up their squelling this week and require.. .well, I don't know, something, until I can get it seen Monday; but I'm hopeful there's no shortage of drivers

Hi Tom & everyone: on returning to Calgary, could I hitch a ride downtown or to an LRT station? Appreciate the convenience instead of bussing it at midnight :)

    March 21, 2013

  • Tom

Mihaela, Carol. We can meet the two of you at Petro Can about 3:30ish.

Morgan, we can arrange it so that you get a ride home afterwards. Do you need a ride to Shouldice? If so I can pick you up on the way.

    Cheryl.... bummmer...... :(

Thanks Tom appreciate the arrangement. Daytime getting to Shouldice is no problem...just don't have the guts to try it at night...

Thx Mike, That is the Wind Ridge side with Pigeon Mtn access closing April 1. We will be on the other side of the range coming up from Hwy 742 (Spray Lakes Rd.)

I am new to calgary and interested in going to this trip if a spot opens up. New to the mountains but I have been a regular winter hiker/backpacker in Ontario. Capable of hiking 20-30km a day.
I have micro spike and 30" mountain snowshoe and most of the gears normally required for scrambling.

    Hi Tom,
I gave some thought yesterday to a moonlight scramble that same weekend, then saw your trip announcement. I will likely post a outing for Friday, as I can't join you on the Saturday evening.
    Cheers,

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
