Pub based brainstorm for a spring trip somewhere like BC or Mexico

I have some experience paddling in BC and in Mexico- I'm sure there are others with great experiences to share. Lets go for a beer and chat about this and possibly come up with a plan for a great spring trip!

I prefer no guide. Keen on any trip. My friends - who are fit for 60 - were constantly told to wait on their guided trip. I think a guide is worth it when it is dangerous conditions.

thx Michael, nice to have met a few more ppl. I think we might consider doing it again. For all those who havent been there lets just make sure that everyone knows that Undercurrents and the U of C are putting on Self rescue classes this winter in the pool!

Thanks all who came out. We had a lively and informative discussion and information dump. Several of the attendees were waaaay more experienced than the rest of us relative newbees and had a wealth of information and advice. Again thank you.

The more experienced paddlers seemed to see limited value in guided trips while lazier guys like me might consider it. The important point with the guided tours was that you have little control about who else goes and the guide must cater to the lowest common denominator.

Of course there were dozens of fantastic destinations in BC and Mexico- limited only by cost, time and weather. BC's weather being more restrictive and Mexico's distance causing more expense.

We each outlined what we were after and there were some areas of overlap. Since we are "all organizers" we decided to narrow our own goal down and post it here and invite others to join us.

All in all it was a worthwhile and informative discussion and a great opportunity to meet other adventurers and be inspired to try more paddling. :)

Just a quick suggestion, shouldn't we try to get more ppl involved and sort of get a little calendar for 2014 going before zeroing in on one particular destination?

If we paddle through a Baja based company it could run around[masked]Us+ and getting into Loreto can be complicated from Calgary....I've wanted to do it for a long time but I just can't justify the cost when we have so many choices at our doorstep....so there's my 2 cents! Now that I have my boat I am ready willing and able!

It cost me a little over 2k including flights. Westjet ti LAX and an easy short hop to Loredo where we were met at the airport.

I've made a few trips there with my own boat and gear and no guide, the cost is mimimal, cheaper than being at home. All you need is time!

Hola amigos.... If you're considering Baja..... I've paddled there last year and just returned again in Oct. I would highly recommend "BOA", Baja Outdoor Adventures.

I wonder if anyone has any experience paddling kayaks on some of the giant beautiful lakes in BC? That might be a fun option to explore also.

I'm not an organizer on this site and I cant add it to the official thingy above. I'm surprised and happy to see so much interest. :)
